4 out of 5 stars Subdued drama about an intensely obsessive woman   March 15, 2008
BS on parade
5 out of 6 found this review helpful

It's not the Hollywood take on mental illness and obsessive behaviour. There's nothing thrilling or exciting about what this woman does. I wouldn't call it grim but it's quite earthy, plain and matter of fact in its depiction of an irrational woman. br / br /I just couldn't understand her behaviour. It was so alien to me what she was doing. You might not agree with a psychotic character in a film but you can usually see where they're coming from, what drives them. This woman makes no sense. br / br /Eventually I thought, after she collapses, that she has a brain haemorrhage and that would explain her behaviour but no; she collapsed for a different reason. br / br /The movie takes about fifteen minutes to get going but it is genuinely interesting, and even fairly entertaining when the story kicks in. It was not a pretentious film and it's briskly paced.

3 out of 5 stars Who's The Victim Here?   March 26, 2008

Anna (Isabelle Carré) is an unhappy young lady from Paris. She is suicidal and decides to walk into a busy street with little attention for anyone else. She gets knocked down and has to go to the hospital. There she becomes obsessed with a doctor, André Zanevsky, who's a physician. He helps Anna back to health, and she becomes crazily obsessed with him. br / br /The film gets very disturbing - due to the fact it feels so real, director and writer Michel Spinosa makes you feel you're there with it. From Anna's disillusions of love with André right through to the act she commits to get his attention. The big underlying question is: did André send out all the wrong messages unconsciously, or does Anna really see the right signs and make the wrong judgements on how to get her man? No one can question her crazy behaviour which is just unacceptable, but was it just blind love? In any case, her behaviour was totally wrong and out of order, and she really does some despicable things. br / br /The film is beautifully put together, and you get the feeling Michel really has researched the topic, or even had first hand experience of the phenomena; the lapse of conscious during the vandalism of André's home well executed with fade in and outs, the scenes where she follows him, and the scene where she barrages her hotel room. The music is also very good, minimal and depressing - making the scene well set for what we see. br / br /This film is definitely disturbing, no doubt, but the viewer is put into a head-spin about obsession and even makes us question ourselves. The colouring of the film is perfect too, rather off-toned, giving a surreal feeling, like a spectator on Anna's existence. br / br /I wouldn't recommend this to under 18s really, it's quite shocking at times and some of the themes explored can be confusing. I am very surprised that the BBFC allowed this to go under a 15 cert. br / br /The DVD itself is bad, no extras, no options of turning off the subtitles, so if you're like me and can understand the French, you'll not be able to remove the English text, which is Americanised English, usual really. The 2.1 mix was horribly distorted, I had to switch to 5.1 to get a decent sound from it. The picture is pretty good, but as a DVD 9, I would have expected a better bitrate from the movie. br / br /This is a good film, but if you have a nervous disposition I'd probably avoid this. If on the other hand you love Hitchcock style psychological dramas you're going to be in your element here, as it's sublime, intense and doesn't let you go until the credits roll. Just when you think it's over, it's not. br / br /A must see for European cinema fans, as the other reviewer said this isn't Hollywood, it's disturbingly real feel makes your spine tingle.
