Amazon.co.uk Review Will Smith stars in the third adaptation of Richard Matheson's classic science-fiction novel about a lone human survivor in a post-apocalyptic world dominated by vampires. This new version somewhat alters Matheson's central hook, i.e., the startling idea that an ordinary man, Robert Neville, spends his days roaming a desolated city and his nights in a house sealed off from longtime neighbours who have become bloodsucking fiends. In the new film, Smith's Neville is a military scientist charged with finding a cure for a virus that turns people into crazed, hairless, flesh-eating zombies. Failing to complete his work in time, and after enduring a personal tragedy, Neville finds himself alone in Manhattan, his natural immunity to the virus keeping him alive. With an expressive German shepherd, his only companion, Neville is a hunter-gatherer in sunlight, hiding from the mutants at night in his Washington Square town house and methodically conducting experiments in his ceaseless quest to conquer the disease.p/ The film's first half almost suggests that iI Am Legend/i could be one of the finest movies of 2007. Director Francis Lawrence's extraordinary, computer-generated images of a decaying New York City reveal weeds growing through the cracks of familiar streets that are also overrun by deer and prowled by lions. It's impossible not to be fascinated by such a realistically altered cityscape, reverting to a natural environment, through which Smith moves with a weirdly enviable freedom, offset by his wariness over whatever is lurking in the dark of bank vaults and parking garages. Lawrence and screenwriters Mark Protosevich and Akiva Goldsman wisely build suspense by withholding images of the monsters until a peak scene of horror well into the story. It must be said, however, that the computer-enhanced creatures don't look half as interesting as they might have had the filmmakers adhered more to Matheson's vampire-nightmare vision. iI Am Legend/i is ultimately noteworthy for Smith's remarkable performance as a man so lonely he talks to mannequins in the shops he frequents. The film's latter half goes too far in portraying Smith's Neville as a pitiable man with a messianic mission, but this lapse into pathos does nothing to take away from the visual and dramatic accomplishments of its first hour. --iTom Keogh/i

The best Will Smith performance yet! April 29, 2008 KM (England) 12 out of 17 found this review helpful
'I Am Legend' is the newest movie adaption of the classic Richard Matheson sci-fi/horror novel. Will Smith stars as the last man on Earth, Robert Neville - a military scientist who is trying to find a cure to a virus that has wiped out the whole of the human race. In the deserted streets of New York City and with only his dog, Sam as company, Neville tries to stay alive from the mutant victims of the plague, whilst also sending out radio messages to try and find any other survivors like himself who may be immune to the deadly virus.

br /I've not read the book and have never seen "The Omega Man" starring Charlton Heston, so am unable to compare this to either of them, or any of the other versions of this that are about, but I can say that this is without a doubt the best film that I have ever seen Will Smith in (and I'm a bit of a fan of his) and how he didn't win any awards for this exceptional performance is beyond me. He has learnt a lot of acting skills since his days back in The Fresh Prince of Bel Air as this is one of the best performances I've seen in a long time, especially as for a majority of the film it is Smith on his own (and his dog). He really does capture the lonliness that the character is feeling and displays these emotions very believably. The city looks amazing too and is very eerie with the streets in the aftermath of chaos and now all overgrown and empty.
br /
br /Although the night lurkers aren't too scary due to the CGI effects making them not look very real (I'd of preferred them to be actors in make-up), the film is very creepy in certain scenes and had me at the edge of my seat as it does get very tense indeed. It's not the most action packed film, but is still very exciting and very fast moving the whole way through, especially as it is only just over an hour and a half long it never has time to get boring.
br /
br /I also watched this DVD on a player that upscales to 1080p and the picture quality is absolutely brilliant for standard definition and is one of the best I've seen on my player so far. The special features are ok with a pretty decent alternative ending but some un-impressive moving comics.
br /
br /Overall this is one of the best films of 2007that I really regret not seeing at the cinema but the sound and picture quality are so good on this DVD, I didn;t mind watching it at home at all. I definitely highly recommend this to anyone looking for a decent post-apocolyptic sci-fi horror and any fans of Will Smith.

Get this version, NOT the 1-disc edition! September 7, 2009 Daniel Grosvenor (Wales) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This film got a lot of bad press when it first came out, but I'm a big fan of post-apocalyptic worlds so decided to check it out. Fortunately I bought the 2-disc edition; if I had only bought the single-disc my rating of this film would be a lot lower.
br /
br /Why? Well, the 2 discs are essentially different films. Disc 1 is the version shown in the cinema, which is great up until the last half hour when any semblance of plot, logic or good writing is thrown out the window in exchange for lots of death and big explosions.
br /
br /Disc 2, however, is the *director's cut* version of the film: while 90% of the film is exactly the same, that final 10% makes all the difference. Having watched through both, it's obvious that this is how the director/writer intended the film to be all along. No doubt somewhere along the way the studio said "this ending makes people think; get rid of it and just put a big explosion instead." (Don't you just love it when Hollywood does that?)
br /
br /My advice would be to throw Disc 1 away as soon as you open the case and just watch Disc 2. It ties up loose ends in the plot, answers questions raised earlier in the film, and also engages your brain just enough for it to excrete that little feeling of 'I've done something thought-provoking, so feel less guilty about vegetating in front of the TV for the last two hours.'
br /
br /That is, of course, unless unanswered questions and plot holes don't bother you and you would much rather see things go boom, in which case stick with Disc 1.
Read the book, love the movie April 17, 2008 P. Holmes (East Yorkshire, UK) 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
I have read the book and have also seen the movie. I know I am likely to be shot here, but I much prefered the film! Even though I thought the book was ok, I did find it very drawn out in places and some aspects of the book were fleeting moments, where as in the film the same moments were much more established. For example the film really made you feel his relationship with the Sam (the dog) in the same way that Castaway made you feel for Wilson (the ball). However in the book this is not felt and is done extremely quickly. Now I must admit I did see the film before reading the book so could have been influenced. However I think you need see the film for what it is and read the book for what that is. They are two different things (the same as the two Italian Job films. The first one was great, the second was good. However if you compare them then you will be dissapointed). To stop people mentioning the book maybe they should have called this film something else. In the book they are vampires, in the film they are dark seekers, in the book he lives in a small town, in the film it's NYC, in the book they know where he lives, in the film they don't - the list goes on. In fact the only two similarities is the title and the lead charactors name (and the fact he's trying to find a cure)

br /Regarding the CGI it's not as bad as some people are making out. I think peoples expectations are far too high nowadays. As for Will Smith - Great as ever!
Wow!! This is a Powerful Performance by Will Smith April 21, 2008 R. Hallett (UK) 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
I watched this thinking it might be a light-hearted Independence Day type performance by Will Smith. I watched this and have GREAT admiration and respect for Will Smith. Its one of the most powerful performances I have ever seen. He makes you feel what it likes to be there and identify with him. This is one of the most disturbing and powerful films I have seen in years. I spoke to some friends and family about the effect this film had on me. They have reminded me it's just a Film, and it could never happen. If it should ever become reality, I don't want to be the last person left. The agony that this person portrays/suffers in the film is quite overwhelming.
A fantastic film April 25, 2008 P. Davies 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
See this film - It's the best 2 hrs I've spent watching a film in a long time. How someone rated it 1 star is totally beyond me. Maybe they didn't understand the subject matter????
br /
br /I'm not going to comment on plot because I don't want to spoil it for anyone, but I can say that it had the balance between suspense and action just right.
br /
br /Watch it - it's great entertainment and will have you talking about it with others.
