Amazon.co.uk Review
There's a reason why Cindy Crawford was dubbed "Baby Gia" when she first hit the modeling scene. Indeed, Crawford, now the world's best-known supermodel, greatly resembled model Gia Carangi, who went from high school to the cover of British Vogue in less than two years. Carangi appeared on many more covers of Vogue (French, British, Italian, and American) and Cosmopolitan before dying of complications from AIDs (she was an IV heroin user) in 1986. Now most people recognise Carangi's name from this powerful HBO film that stars Golden Globe-winner Angelina Jolie, who comes by her talent honestly. Jolie is the daughter of veteran actor Jon Voight, and her own training as a model serves her well--she has the moves. Throughout, she's heartbreaking--as no doubt the real Carangi was--effective, and stunning.p/ With good source material (Stephen Fried's iA Thing of Beauty: The Tragedy of Supermodel Gia/i), Jolie's stunning performance, and strong directing by Michael Cristofer, the movie goes beyond the merely sensational. The script was co-written by Cristofer and novelist Jay McInerney, whose iBright Lights, Big City/i covers similar territory. As a cautionary tale, iGia/i works. But to watch Jolie in her character's tragic self-destruction is utterly compelling. --iN.F. Mendoza/i

5 out of 5 stars Angelina's Truly Spellbinding   August 1, 2008

I recently watched this and having not heard anything about the supermodel Gia Carangi was instantly blown away by Angelina Jolie's portrayal as Gia. You can see why Angelina won an Oscar a year later in her other great film Girl Interrupted. This sad and moving true story tries to explain why Gia did what she did. I won't spoil this for you but, this is not for the faint-hearted. I thought all the acting was great as was Faye Dunaway as Gia's Agent. Angelina's truly spellbinding in this film. Great film all round.

5 out of 5 stars Jolie's best work overlooked.   February 2, 2009

Jolie plays the part of Gia with real skill. I think this film is often overlooked in the wake of Jolie's larger roles, but this really is an exceptional film that tells the true story of model Gia Carangi. Heartfelt and tragic, this film is a great addition to any collection as the gritty element of modelling and drug abuse, as well as homosexuality are confronted.

5 out of 5 stars Angelina at her best...   February 3, 2009

Gia is one of Angelina Jolie's best performances. She plays Gia, known for being one of the worlds first supermodels. Yet there is a much more tragic story behind it, and Jolie convincingly portrays the young girl who went from a stable, confident, sexy and independent young girl to a woman who had everything she could ever want, yet at the same time had nothing, and her desperate need to find love and security ended up destroying her. She was chewed up and spat out by the modelling world, and overall the story told is very poignant and hard hitting, with a clear message. This is one of my favourite films, and I'd definately recommend it.
