A Diamond Lost in the Noise of Hollywood Land March 15, 2009 Jean Erasmus (UK) I had the pleasure to see 'The Good Night' after waiting almost two years to see it due to limited release. I expected someting interesting, but alas, this film somehow found a place deep inside my heart.

br /Similar themes have been done from 'Vanilla Sky' to 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind', but 'The Good Night' is much more subtle and quiet; it feels more organic and real, winding up to an ending I did not expect, leaving me with emotions I can't quite explain.
br /
br /Jake's direction is quite brilliant: from using clunky video shots in the 'real' world contrasted by the divinely photographed scenes in the dream sequences, to photographically placing the arguing couples in their own separate 'units' as a visual metaphor. Both the male and female characters look similar, yet differ completely in temperament, signifying the archetypal poles of men and women.
br /
br /The music was also well chosen, especially the end sequence, invoking the oddest emotions I have felt in a long time.
br /
br /'The Good Night' is probably one of the most interesting films I have seen in years: a quiet yet endearing script, finished in the most subtle direction.
br /
br /It is one of those films that will be re-discovered in years to come by sensitive souls, placing it firmly with the likes of Anthony Minghella's and Tom Tykwer's quiet diamonds, lost in the madness of Hollywood Land.

br /I hope that Jake Paltrow will endure and return; he has much to gift the world...
Big stars - small film March 14, 2008 James D. Keaton 9 out of 12 found this review helpful
This is a really sweet, thoughtful little film about a guy who wants what he can't have. Martin Freeman is Gary playing an ex-musician who now writes advertising jingles, in a loveless relationship of convenience with Dora played by Gwyneth Paltrow, friends with his ex-bandmate played by Simon Pegg who he now works with but who has a slightly better career. And at night he dreams that he has the perfect relationship with a beautiful girl played by Penelope Cruz.
br /This is a well observed, funny film about relationships and the pressures that we put on our lives. But, do not be fooled by the big name cast; this is a small, quiet, gentle, almost art-house movie. Those expecting a broad comedy will be sorely disappointed.
br /Good performances from Paltrow and Freeman and a nice comic turn from the increasingly popular Simon Pegg, make this a lovely little film.

A great film that actually makes you think August 29, 2008 G. Crystal (Scotland) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Don't be put off by the two negative reviews on this film, obviously written by people who don't actually like films that make you think about life. This is a great little film about someone who rather than face the problems in his life would rather chase the girl of his dreams in his dreams. Lucid dreaming and Penelope Cruz brings to mind Vanilla Sky but Freeman's character knows he is dreaming and wakes up to disasterous consequences. If you have ever been in a "grass is greener" situation you would do well to watch this film. Funny and thought provoking can be hard to pull off but this film more than manages it. Great cast, great story, great film. Negative reviewers open your eyes.
Slightly Surreal Socks September 3, 2008 J. S. Meins (UK) So, you are wandering around the local video club and you come across a movie you've never heard of, complete with a stella cast and some dubious on-cover reviews from the likes of OK Magazine and Bliss. Do you take a risk or run a mile? I'm really frightened of that sort of situation and I think it took real guts on my part to potentially waste £3.95.
br /"The Good Night" comes from the same slightly surreal ballpark as "Eternal Sunshine" and "The Bothersome Man" except Gwyneth's brother, Jake Palthrow, can't really match the glorious out-there weirdness of genius writer/directors like Michel Gondrey. Never the less this is still way left of the mainstream and the sort of thing you will still have some memory of in a weeks time. It's not a particularly amusing movie but its definitely entertaining, firstly because it's different and unpredictable and secondly because of the superb performances, with the whole cast - bar perhaps Gwyneth doing a great job(who just tries a dour Diaz in "Being John Malkovich" thing); Martin Freeman does his "Tim" but is a bit deeper than usual, Simon Pegg plays a bad(ish) guy for a change, Penelope Cruz isnt annoying at all (which really IS surreal) and Danny Devito possibly on a career best. Add great cameos from Michael Gambon and Jarvis Cocker and you have four quid well spent. It might even be worth buying because it's the sort of film that could easily benefit from a second watch what with its wilfully confusing storyline.
Ok - could do better! October 27, 2008 Gimme Gompo (UK) I bought this purely because it had Simon Pegg in it - he is actually very good, but, there isn't enough of him! I like Martin Freeman a lot - but this film was slow going and unfunny. Not a great film, but watchable on a rainy Sunday afternoon when there is nothing better to do!
