Pure Tarantino Genius April 24, 2008 Mr. A. G. Roberts 2 out of 8 found this review helpful
The Tarantino genius lives on in his fifth installment.
br /Death proof is an intriguing,Berating and satirical movie.
br /The three great finer points that succumbs to a Tarantino film.
br /Kurt Russell aka {Stunt man Mike}Is actually very good as the massacistic pyscho stunt driver,Whom prey's on group's of lady's,but in a clever, and unexpected indicative manner.
br /The female stars are simultaneously great in the roles.
br /Tarantino predominately captivates, and extracts the best out of his ensemble leading ladies in a way that is so real to life.
br /His quick pasted dialogue is fast and furious, that keeps you mesmerised and enchanted to what will happen next, though not in the typical Hollywood style.
br /This film is a very ambiguous, provocative, and some times dark, shocking, and at times quite funny movie.
br /If you're an avid fan of Tarantino's genres, or not, I think You will undoubtedly love this sublime film wholeheartedly.
One of Tarantino's best! January 21, 2009 Road Apple (Mean Gene's Bar) Noticing how many negative reviews are posted I feel compelled to throw in a positive. Funnily enough most of the negative reviews are correct in that the film is very long and very talky, but I loved it!

br /First off as soon as the film starts you know its Tarantino, his finger prints are all over it. The man cares about every single shot and every single edit, it's the kind of conviction that is so lacking in other filmmakers. The attention to detail is what brings me back to his films time and again.

br /The plot seems standard slasher film tripe at first, girls go out for a good time and get stalked by homicidal madman...but this being QT there is so much more going on screen than that. His characters are just that, CHARACTERS. QT does indulge himself with the seemingly overlong narrative, but on repeat viewings the dialogue is very funny and it pays off (most of the time). The acting is fine and dandy throughout, some of the girls are annoying but meant to be so, and Eli Roth shows he's a better actor than he is a director. Kurt Russell and Zoe Bell are the stars of the show, easily Kurt's best work, he holds the screen with humour and malice and even pity. Zoe Bell is just a great stuntwoman and fun to watch.
br /
br /Ah yes the stunts are AMAZING!!! The first crash is the best ever captured on screen, forget lightweight pile ups or CGI cars exploding, this is the real deal. The car chase at the end of the film is crazy, I don't know how much it cost to insure Zoe Bell against injury but it must have been a lot. What a pay off!

br /After seeing this at the cinema I wanted to watch it again straight away but eventually waited for the DVD and will probably splash out on the Blu-Ray too.

Excellent story-telling and film-making May 20, 2009 M. Lyle (Larne, N Ireland) Mr.Tarantino employs a rather subtle touch here and effortlessly churns out another classic film. Those QT "fans" who are waiting for Pulp Fiction 2 will be disappointed, but the sensible viewer will quickly realise this is a brilliant and daring work worthy of the highest praise.
br /
br /The key to the film is THE crash, if you look away or do not follow it then the rest of proceedings will remain a mystery. There are no Michael Bay type explosions in the film, in fact all of the cheap tricks that dominate today's films are mercifully absent.
br /
br /You have to be patient to enjoy this film, but if you give it a chance you will be rewarded with a real treat.

Enjoyable October 14, 2009 M. Dowden (London, UK) I must admit that I am not a fan of Tarantino, the only film I had seen of his that I really liked was of course Pulp Fiction [DVD] [1994], so it was with mixed feelings that I decided to eventually watch this movie. I must admit that I was pleasantly surprised despite the fact that there was some dodgy editting and the sound of the first half of my dvd was pretty quiet.
br /
br /Tarantino has to my mind had some great one-liners in some of his films and some really good dialogue, which this film has, also he does seem to turn in at times some memorable soundtracks which this film has. Of course having Kurt Russell doesn't hurt when casting a film and the great stuntwoman Zoe Bell being in the cast is a boost as well. Admittedly there is a lot wrong with this film but by the same token there is a lot right. The first half is a bit slow moving leading up to Kurt Russell killing a carload of young women, but the second half where Russell meets his match is great. Zoe Bell as herself hanging off the front of a car and also riding a car door like a latter day knight are great, and the cast look like they are having a good time.
br /
br /With some great car chases and mayhem this is a definite homage to those good old films where we had such things in abundance. The dialogue between the two sets of women is vintage Tarantino and the violence is more on a fun level than that of mindless. This isn't a film where you need to think but one where you can put your feet up and have a drink. This is more of a film for the lads but so saying, my mum is a pensioner and she loved the second half of this (I did wonder about showing it to her). So if you want something fun to relax to then watch this, but don't expect anything mind blowing
Far from perfect, but has many moments of brilliance August 21, 2008 BS on parade 2 out of 4 found this review helpful

br /"Death Proof" is a fascinating mix of the terrible and the brilliant. Not much cop as a slasher flick, but as its own thing it was good overall. Some of the endless dialogue was boring, while over times I lost track of time and didn't mind the talking. Terrible sudden ending though - the film is missing an important scene when the girls return the beat up car to its owner, and we get his reaction.
br /
br /"Planet Terror" (5 stars) is a brilliant zombie movie; one part serious, two parts spoof. It's stupid in all the right ways. I was put off by the silly machine gun leg poster. Turns out she only gets the leg enhancement in the last ten minutes, and by that point it feels right at home with all the other action. A masterpiece of its genre. I loved it. Much better than the similarly jokey "Evil Dead II" in my opinion.
br /
br /Both are worth seeing. I think they made a mistake with the original "Grindhouse" film order. Following the visceral, kinetic eye-candy of "Planet Terror" with the plodding, talk-heavy "Death Proof" makes no sense.
