5 out of 5 stars It all depends on how you approach this movie   September 28, 2008

A lot of reviews on My Blueberry Nights are sour. People expected something else from the director, the script, from Norah Jones. But that's all a matter of people assuming they can dictate any creator's output (they expect something of the artist that they already saw or heard before, they chain an artist to his previous work and take that to the moment they play a cd for the first time or watch a movie premiere). br /As a work on it's own: in my humble opinion a beautifully crafted road movie, well, more off-road actually, preparing us slices of life, love and dead. Jude Law and Norah Jones are the soul mates in the leading roles and mainframe of the film, but don't miss David Strathairn and Rachel Weisz in their 'segment'. That's Oscar-material, those two! br /

5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Love Story/Road Movie...   June 16, 2008

...Marking Wong Kar Wai's english language debut and Norah Jones' acting debut, this is not an astounding movie but it is very close to it. Great performances from the whole cast, Rachel Weisz and David Strathairn really stand out. Fantastic cinematography from Darius Khondji, and an almost perfect soundtrack really set the mood. i highly recommend this movie for fans of Wong Kar Wai's other works and anyone looking for a visually stunning piece of mood cinema.

4 out of 5 stars Not at all bad, but certainly not great.   July 15, 2008

Let's start by saying I am somewhat biased - looking through the few reviews I've done will reveal that Wong Kai-Wai has both my no.1 (In The Mood For Love) and no.2 (2046) films - Whilst his first foray into the English Language is not terrible, it certainly is not groundbreaking stuff. Overall I can't help but think of what might of been. br / br /Still, this is a good and pretty simple movie. Performance are great - Norah Jones on her acting debut. Rachel Weisz and most notably David Strathairn probably steal the show. Jude Law's Manchester accent, may not be the greatest, but his character is at least likeable. br / br /The story follows a Broken-Hearted Norah Jones travelling across America after the breakdown of a relationship after her partner had an affair which she found out during a visit to Law's café, the people she meets, their stories and the relationship between Jones / Law. br / br /As I've said this is not a classic, but worth a watch, especially for a Wong Kai-Wai fan who will enjoy the similarities between older works. br /As always, great direction and stills are used throughout the movie - just shame the script wasn't somewhat better. Still give it a try - you may like it. br / br /3.5 out of five

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing   July 5, 2008

I approached this film with apprehension expecting the worst because this is Wong Kai-Wai's first English language film. I think my concerns were justified as this really is a terrible film from a great director. One has to wonder how much control Wong Kai-Wai had over the casting for the film: Jude Law, Norah Jones, Natalie Portman and Rachel Weisz I can only describe as weak but to be fair that may have something to do with a poor script also. Why Wong worked with crime writer Lawrence Block is quite beyond me and secondly why he chose to use a script when all of his best work was improvised remains a mystery. The characters are hollow and the plot episodic. Another problem really is the cinematography by Darius Khondji (Delicatessen,1991; Seven,1995) which I found to be distracting and sugary. In no way does it enhance the film unlike the work of Wong Kai Wai's previous collaborator Christopher Doyle. br / br /Those who are unfimiliar with the work of Wong Kai-Wai would do better by watching "Chungking Express"(1994), "Happy Together"(1997) or "In The Mood For Love"(2000) first before watching this. Those who are fans already will probably watch this anyway, if not, well you're not missing much.

2 out of 5 stars as jaded as jude law is getting in his old age   January 5, 2009

jaded as jude law br /i am not jesting when i say jude is turning into a royal court jester for hollywood with his affected british accent which he accentuates and the overflickering, puppy dog expressions he entices to woe teenage girls, talented mr ripley and A.I . are things in distant past ,as for natalie portman if she doesnt take care she will end up surely as the ghoul she played in goyas ghost, br /but comung back to this romcom meets road movie ,its insipid narrative ,cliched characters and oh so arty farty neon drenched ,fast and slow motion camera shots of midwest and new york are absurdly hilarious,it wants to be a woody allen annie hall and ends up as bad as ,maybe a little better then definitely maybe . br /the new york diner is so stereotyped with its anglo owner and his key jar with shots of doors opening and shutting in a ridiculously metaphorical reference to the characters lives and fate, its pretentious premise extends from a silly scene with the leads ending up with broken noses after assaults and then they end up asleep in the diner in impossible postures ,the kiss between nora and jude must have required some loose jointed acrobatics ,across a diner top . br /rachel weisz is the only actress who brings some reality and conviction with her brief cameo as an embittered memphis wife ,but otherwise this insipid pie is just as tasteless as the ones jude keeps piling into his trash bin , br /this is frankly a wasted oppurtunity of trying to create a meaningful experiment as an indie movie , br /but it falls head first into the trap of cheap sentimentality as symbolised by the portman character,a lost little girl in a love -hate relation with her dad ,riding a jag in nevada desert with a compulsion for gambling ,but the failure is mainly attributed to norahs non acting skills ,her ability to sleep in a diner on a table and judes artificial antics ,which irritated me to distraction , br /usman k.- jbz7879 br /
