5 out of 5 stars you might hate this film but...   April 21, 2008

then again you might love it for it's an Argento movie and with it comes the usual controversy! Since the 70's Argento's very personal and unique view of the thriller / horror genre has divided not only horror movie fans but his own fans to, even the critic and fan Alan Jones has voiced his dissatisfaction with Mother of Tears. From my 5 stars rating you can tell that I feel somewhat differently about it. I have followed Argento's work for years and have nothing but the highest regard for him. Even his weakest films have moments of genius that set him apart from the rest. Firstly Mother of Tears has many elements that make an Argento film, ravishing photography, an eye for the bizarre and obscure details, brutal violence and gore and all presented in a dream like and magical world. In his earlier films Suspiria and Inferno this world is more or less confined to the houses of the witches but in Mother of Tears it extends to the whole city of Rome bringing with it sporadic violence and chaos. It's a brave move and the lowish budget doesn't quite pull it off and this would be my main criticism. The violence shown in these scenes is nothing more extreme than a night out in Manchester (I guess there must be a witch house here in Salford!) and a taxi driver doesn't bat an eyelid as he drives past a guy with a gun and other attacks. It's all quite strange and uninvolving. br /Fans might be upset that the 'set piece murders' that made his early movies so popular are absent on this occasion but throughout there is a fabulous atmosphere of dread. To really enjoy this film you have succumb to its weird dream like state. br /OK, if the horror you like has numbers after it (SAW 1 2 3 4) you probably wont like it, but if you fancy something like Tarkovsky with gore then give it a try (but please watch Suspiria and Inferno first). br /

5 out of 5 stars Another great one by Argento!!!!!!   April 19, 2008

This third installment of the classic Three Mothers anthology is a very different breed of Argento. Much of which can be seen in some of his other later works such as Jennifer, Pelts, or even The Stendhal Syndrome. The gore in this film alone is astonishing! A film that keeps you on the edge of your seat without that pretentious feel to it! I would say (without giving away the whole story) that this is one of the best Argento films to date! Asia is amazing (as always)along with the rest of the cast. This is a must own for any fan of Italian horror and proves that Argento can stay cool and up with the times, while creating something brilliant!

5 out of 5 stars Baroque, deliciously over the top Argento!   June 25, 2008

The prestigious New York Times (among others) has given the new Argento film a great review... and with good reason. The Mother of Tears gives us a sure-footed, bolder Argento; taking us from one shocking moment to the next. While the narrative comes frightfully close to unravelling at times, this is a thrill ride that holds you to the end. br / br /Don't listen to the rantings of geeks all over the web: bad acting, implausible plot-twists, bad acting and dubbing are things Argento has been accused of from the very start of his career. But he manages to make art. br / br /While I've not liked his last few films, Mother of Tears has reminded me of why I love him as a director.

4 out of 5 stars A true return to form!   April 22, 2008

Most fans of Dario Argento would admit that his work over the last twenty years has been somewhat hit-and-miss. With perhaps the exception of Trauma and The Stendhal Syndrome, his last great movie was 1987's Opera. Much of his latter work was dogged down with bad dubbing, cheesy soundtracks and incoherent plots. Mother of Tears is a surprisingly inventive and tense film, with some truly amazing set pieces (the section in the train station being the biggest stand out). Whilst certain elements don't always gel (such as Daria Nicolodi's cameo as a ghost), and the ending doesn't quite live up to the rest of the story, but Mother of Tears is a worth addition to the 'Three Mothers' trilogy (and, in my opinion, even better than Inferno). Ignore the critics, Argento fans should check this out!

4 out of 5 stars Crazy and confused - Pure Argento   May 16, 2008

I was expecting bad things of this movie. After all the anticipation and build-up, most reviews were very damning. This was actually a good thing as my expectations were lowered. And when finally watching it? Absolutely loved it! I have followed Argento for years and yet his recent output has left me disappointed. The Masters of Horror entries suggested something better. But this is a crazy, confused, gory fun ride! OK, it lacks the garish colour schemes of the Classic Suspiria and Inferno, but so what? It is as much a twisted fairy tale as any of them. The effects, the 80's witches and acting; all areas that have been criticised, actually made me smile. It has some decent gore effects, an effective Simonetti soundtrack and I can't see how Argento fans could dislike it. Surely to be an Argento fan means more than worshipping only Suspiria? He's made many films since then with all the usual faults. Bad acting is nothing new and now people suddenly expect something that Argento has never offered. Downsides- the ending is a let down. Build up and up...then finishes very flatly. I think with a little more money and time, this could have been corrected. Overall, if you want a serious, thought-provoking, realistic horror film, look elsewhere. But for bonkers, yet entertaining blast from the past, go see the Third Mother.
