Perfectly crafted March 11, 2008 A. Thornton (London, UK.) 50 out of 53 found this review helpful
I saw this film twice at the cinema. It tells the immortal story of Akbar, the greatest Mughul Emporer, as well as the circumstances surrounding his meeting, marriage and early life with his new Hindu wife, Jodhaa. The two protagonists do stirling work of portraying their characters and have great chemistry - something that is absolutely needed in a film such as this. It left me with such good feelings after seeing it I will be looking to buy the DVD when released. The only downside of the DVD that could seriously make me rethink my purchase is the running time. It is advertised as 120 minutes on Amazon. At the cinema, the film was three and a half hours (210 minutes)long. This may seem a long time to some but it flew by and every part of the film was needed to the proper flow, pacing and development of the story. I sincerely dread to think where they have made the cuts which is nearly an hour lost. Too much for a film of this calibre which really should be released on DVD at the same running time as in the cinema.
A classic master piece that shall be remembered for a long long time! July 28, 2008 S. Aljibouri (london,uk) 15 out of 18 found this review helpful
Let't get one thing straight , you haven't watched anything so opulent, so magnificent like this one in a long long time on the hindi screen.
br /It's not just body beautiful, but there's soul as well!. It looks gorgeous, the red brick palaces, the desert forts, the green flashes of parrots , the snowy white fantail pigeons,It's all a visual feast.

br /Coming to performances, the main stars showcase natural chemistry and personify their charecters so much that you forget you are watching actors playing a role!Aishwarya Rai is a ravishing Jodhaa, and Hrithik Roshan looks picture-perfect as Akbar.
br /
br /As a director, every frame of Jodhaa Akbar is impressive!!!The magnitude to put together a historical film and blending a love story is no easy feat. Ashutosh Gowariker succeeds in producing a film that is sure to be among the best of 2008.
br /
br /To sum up Jodhaa Akbar leaves you spellbound, entranced and awestruck!!I felt privileged as a moviegoer. Privileged that such a film had been made!

Sensual Rush August 27, 2008 Antyllus (London, UK) 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
Directed and produced by Ashutosh Gowariker 'Jodhaa Akbar' is a commensurate sensual feast of colours and sounds. The music is composed by A. R. Rahman. Also by the same director the acclaimed Lagaan [2001]

br /Really one of the best Bollywood films I have seen recently! It is a fitting, if heavily fictionalised, tribute to Akbar - one of the greatest Moghul emperors. Some of the political aspects though are based on real events - omitted however is the forceful conversion of many Hindi to Islam and the conversion to mosques or destruction of Hindu temples during his reign.
br /
br /The name "Jodha" was used for Akbar's wife for the first time by Lieutenant-Colonel James Tod, in his book The Annals and Antiquities of Rajasthan: Central and Western Rajput States of India Vol 1-3. Jodha Bai was really the wife of Prince Salim, the future emperor Jahangir.
br /
br /The film had encountered some criticism in certain states of Indida and was banned from cinemas (now overturned).
br /
br /The story centers on the romance between the Muslim Mughal Emperor Akbar (Hrithik Roshan) and his Hindu wife, Harka Bai, renamed Mariam-uz-Zamani - Jodhabai (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan) in the film. Then as now prejudices and religious intolerance held sway. The love story builds around this and the various political intrigues of the empire. Jodhaa, the daughter of King Bharmal of Amer, resents being a mere political pawn in a marriage of alliance. Akbar's biggest challenge in this movie is winning the love of Jodhaa - against the prejudicial opinions. Jodhaa-Akbar is their untold love story.

br /Akbar was known for his wisdom and fainress. One can still see the wonderful discussion room in Fatehpur Sikri, the former imperial city of Akbar at Sikandra about 8 km from the city of Agra, where Akbar assembled religious representatives from different faiths for discussions. Akbar stated that no religion is better than any other and one can find religious solace in any faith. The name 'Jesus' also features on one of the gates in the city. Elizabeth I sent letters to Akbar whose fame as a wise and just monarch had even spread to the English court. Akbar was an artisan, artist, armorer, blacksmith and theologian.

br /The film however, in what it wishes to represent, is a great feast of colours sounds and movement for eyes and ears. Fantastic!

Such an epic! August 30, 2008 Lamaline (Royaume-Uni) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I am not very knowledgeable about Bollywood films so when I bought this one I basically did because of Miss Rai I love.
br /The film is beautifully staged and directed, there is not too much singing and the story is such an epic of love and war and it makes you jump and participate in front of your TV.
br /I had a great time. Had to stop to put the second part in but what a film!
Incredibly good December 23, 2008 Lyn (Melbourne Australia) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Visually stunning, beautifully acted, moving, battle scenes that dont have the cloned-by-computer look that we've seen recently in the west.
br /It is basically a beautiful evolving love story that is very 'from the heart'. It is also about a great and good ruler who is wise, caring and had unusually high principles for his times..
br /It is sumptuous and shot in some stunning palaces and sets.
br /There are some battle scenes but they are short and symbolically violent rather than going on about realism as Hollywood seems to prefer (and I avoid thesedays). Some may not like the lack of realsim in that but frankly I got the point long ago about war and I dont need to see gut-wrenching images to drive that point further home. This isnt about war even though old power struggles and conspiracies are part of the times and woven in.
br /The ending is satisfying and the film reminds you about the higher points of being loving, wise and evolved as a human being.
br /The music is more subtle and traditional and Hithrik doesnt get to dance yet the music is also evocative and I tracked it down for its own merits even though I usually prefer the upbeat catchy Indian music.
br /Even the English subtitles are credited with the name of the translator. Rightly so as the words are poetic and beautiful.
br /Very fine performances from Hithrik and Ashwairya who were born for these roles.
br /Its cinematography is beautiful and the whole movie not only isnt amateurish but is superior to most coming out of Hollywood.
br /Beautiful.
