4 out of 5 stars Not what you expect   June 18, 2009
Paul Fillery (Worcester, UK)

First off, this is NOT a horror film. It's closer to "Seven" than it is to "Saw", but even that's not a very good comparison. There is some violence and blood, but the most disturbing images are from the brief flashback to the incident that's at the heart of this film. The twist is not a twist - certainly not a shock, anyway, and is with many thrillers these days it's a pretty downbeat ending (although anything else wouldn't work). At heart it's a film about revenge, but as we are reminded several times there are shades of gray. What would you do to protect a loved one? Could you kill someone you loved to save yourself? The killer believes that altruism doesn't exist in nature - all animals carry the selfish gene of the title, and will do everything to protect themselves. Even at the expense of others. br / br /I really don't understand reviewers panning the acting. Stellan Skarsgard is excellent - ok, he appears to be a stereotypical grizzled and taciturn street cop. But when you get to the end of the film you realise that it's the secrets he has been carrying that have made him that way, and it's a very nuanced performance. Melissa George pouts a lot - I still can't help seeing her as Angel in "Home Away". br / br /What struck me as odd was that the setting is obviously New York (it's never stated, but there are wideshots of the city, the police cars carry the NYPD badge, and some of the streets are obviously downtown Manhatten) and yet the cast is almost entirely non-American. Selma Blair is the only main member of the cast that is from the States. As well as Skarsgard and George, you've Tom Hardy, Paul Kaye, Sally Hawkins, Ashley Walters, John Sharian - who are all Brits. I have read that it was filmed in Ireland; if that's the case, then a big thumbs-up to the production design. Downtown Dublin makes a very convincing Brooklyn/Bronx. br / br /All in all, highly recommended - as long as you're not expecting "Saw" or "Hostel".

4 out of 5 stars Strikingly unusual   August 22, 2008

br /Considering that Waz passes itself off as a mainstream horror movie, I was really surprised at how different it was. The premise is basically- how much pain would you endure to save a loved one? Pretty sick, huh? Don't worry, though; even though it says "Is this the most violent film ever?" on the DVD case, it's not very violent at all in comparison to something like Hostel. br / br /Melissa George delivers a surprising performance as a cute rookie cop, but it's Selma Blair who makes the impact, playing the victim-turned-killer with superb competence. Overall, Waz makes for an OK night in, and it's far better than what some reviewers are making out. However, maybe it's worth waiting until it's about a fiver. br /

4 out of 5 stars Original   October 18, 2008

More like Se7en than Saw. It has more subtlety to it than your typical "gorno" film. Actually it isn't gorno at all. It is quite intelligently handled and it's the psychological premise of this thriller that gives it substance and originality.

4 out of 5 stars Brilliant thriller not torture porn!   June 23, 2008

Despite the marketing of this film as ultra voilent, this isn't some torture porn knock off. Far from it. WZ is an intelligent thriller that makes you stop and question your beliefs about the nature of love. Yes, there's a bit of torture but that serves the story and there's so much more going on. Seen it several times and get more from it each viewing. Noticed that some folks on here are slagging it off. Fair enough, but its important to note the film got pretty much rave reviews in all the important publications and broadsheets! See this!

4 out of 5 stars Overlooked noir gem   March 25, 2009

"WDeltaZ" is the victim of bad marketing. Being compared to "Seven" and "Saw", it had to fail. And the slogan "Is this the most violent film ever?" suggests an orgy of violence and blood. br / br /This is NOT one of the modern ultra-violent movies that try their best to gross you out. Admittedly, there are a few disturbing and gory scenes, but they are not in there for their own sake, they are necessary tools for clarifying characters and motivations.understanding of characters and motivations. "WDeltaZ" is a noir police film as well as a drama about guilt and redemption, or crime and punishment if you will, with a chilling atmosphere and great actors, all of whom are in fine form. There is just one aspect that prevents it from being or becoming a true classic of the genre - all the clues to solving the puzzle are given away in the first act, so that the rest of the movie boils down to just stopping the killer. Apart from that, it's thrilling entertainment. br / br /If you are a fan of Stellan Skarsgard, Melissa George, or Selma Blair, you should seriously consider buying this underappreciated movie.
