4 out of 5 stars An offbeat classic   February 12, 2009

"One Eyed Jacks"(61) was the only film directed by Marlon Brando. Brando replaced the original director Stanley Kubrick following a dispute. The screenplay was written partly by the legendary Sam Peckinpah. The film was based on the novel "The Authentic death of Henry Jones"(58) by Charles Neider. The film has a very strong cast with Karl Malden giving a bravura performance as Dad Longworth. Other Western stalwarts included Slim Pickens, Ben Johnson and Katy Jurado. br / br /The story concerns two bank robbers played by Malden and Brando as Rio, who are trapped and surrounded by Rurales folowing a robbery. They have one horse between them. A decision is made that one will go to fetch more horses and return to help the other. Longworth is the one to go but he decides later looking at the odds to simply ride away with the loot. Rio is captured and does time in a Sonoran prison. Some years later he encounters Longworth living under a cloak of repectability as a towns Marshall. Initially the two appear friendly but it becomes apparent that Rio reminds Dad of his shameful actions of the past, and he wants rid of him. Matters become more complicated when Rio falls for Dads innocent Mexican step daughter. Matters head inexorably to a showdown between the two. br / br /This can certainly be called one of the more offbeat Westerns in its cast, and its stunning use of the beautiful but seldom used Monterey coastal locations. Brando mumbles away moodily as Rio and looks very dashing at times. I am not a great fan of his method style but it is effective enough in this film. Brando somehow managed to shoot an extra five hours of film that was destroyed. This cannot have endeared him to many. The one eyed jacks of the title refers to the split personality of Longworth. One minute a violent criminal, the next a highly respected lawman and then reverting again back to type. br / br /On merit it should not be in any top ten favourite Western list. But film is a personal choice and it would be in mine. Although it has many faults and can seem fragmented, it is haunting and beautiful to look at. It is in short a compelling and mesmeric film at times. I have a friend who rates this his all time favourite movie, and there are occasions in the film that I can see why. The film would be well deserving of a high quality transfer with bonus features and perhaps a directors cut. It is certainly deserving of better than this transfer which is not the best quality. Despite this the DVD is good value just for the film.

4 out of 5 stars Great movie, but poor DVD transfer   April 7, 2009

This Brando movie pulls you in because his character grows from a simple depiction of a criminal to the person who realises he doesnt know who he is. This is about growing up, and of course being betrayed by the very person you thought was the father. It's about how learning how tell right from wrong, an its about falling in love the very first time, with its awkwardness and anxieties. I loved Brando and Pina Pellicer in this one. br / br /The company who oversaw the DVD transfer should be prosecuted for taking a work of art and turning out a poor replica of the original beautiful footage - absolutely appalling. They have not done Brando's legacy any justice.

Unfortunately the picture and audio quality is rather poor. There are no extras and not even english subtitles.
