what a relief... May 3, 2009 Dr. M von Vogelhausen (UK) 9 out of 21 found this review helpful
Finally this has come out, it seemed like time had almost stopped as I waited expectantly. This is a relief for two reasons; firstly, I was never sure that the dancing genius of Dan Brown's descriptions and dialogue could adequately be translated onto the big or small screen; and secondly, for a personal reason that modesty does not allow me to reveal. Like the billions of followers of Mr. Brown around this and many other globes, I had been concerned that the picture I had built up in my mind of Robert Langdon might be replaced by another, of Woody the toy cowboy. I was right and wrong at the same time, as I so often have been since the illegal operation I was forced to perform upon myself in the icy wastes of Surbiton. Indeed Hanks had brought something of his previous roles to this one, but thanks to the magic of blu ray it was now clear that this was as Dan had intended; he is in fact everyman, each of them. Hanks shows a touch of Gump and a hint of the little boy trapped in a man's body, as well as the dying lawyer singing opera in an empty flat and dancing with a drip. Upon rereading the original novel (a daily activity since my recent brush with the clergy) I saw at once how Mr. Brown had set this up. Bravo! Also, the disc is nice and shiny and you can look at it for hours.
The Da Vinci Code as it was intended September 14, 2009 Casdon (East Midlands (UK)) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I already owned Da Vinci Code on DVD however the picture quality on it wasn't the best when views on larger screens exemplified by the extremely blocky subtitles during the French dialogue sequences.
br /
br /When I saw Da Vinci was coming to bluray I was immediately tempted purely because I saw many mentions that the bluray had an extended edit compared to the UK/EU DVD
br /
br /The films plot starts with the murder of the Curator of the Louvre who leaves a message intended for his granddaughter to find Professor Robert Langdon an expert in historical symbology.
br /
br /This very message and a phone call from Catholic Sub sect Opus Dei to the chief investigator Bezu Fache puts Professor Langdon as the chief suspect. Fortunately for Robert the Curators granddaughter and French cryptologist Sofie Neveu comes to assist him in the aim to solve the mystery of why her grandfather sought to bring them together in his death by leaving such bizarre hidden messages and symbology all over himself
br /
br /This puts the two of them into the battle between Opus Dei and the mysterious Priory of Sion for the control of the "Holy Grail"
br /
br /The style of the film is pitched perfectly even in the DVD form to allow the uninitiated to visually understand some of the lengthy sequences in the book which explain Langdon's Neveu's puzzle solving.
br /
br /At times the film is quite slow paced but at others there are some frenetic chases.
br /
br /The difference in quality between the DVD Bluray is very noticable as it should be and the audio is subtle where needed in the various quiet sections but bursts into life during the chase sequence.
br /
br /However for me the big pleasure in this disc for me was the number of short often less than 10s additional bits of footage that help fill in more of the characters motivations than the original DVD edit.
br /Many of these focus around the supporting characters such as Silas and his unswerving devotion to Bishop Aringarosa, while a few subtle additional sequences show the transition of Bezu Fache from the bullish single minded egotist in the opening part of the film to the desperate and then confused and betrayed humble person by the end including a very poinient yet touching extra sequence of his apology to Langdon and Neveu.
br /
br /For those who have read and appreciated the book this helps turn what was an admirable attempt at big screen translation into a worthy film representation. For those that haven't and watch this either for the first time or even having viewed the original it helps to make much more sense of the often complex plots within this story.
br /
br /If you love the Da Vinci code book and don't have the disc or even if you do this is well worth the trade
