Amazon.co.uk Review
A daffy, adorable, and very funny celebration of DIY spirit, iBe Kind Rewind/i stars Mos Def (iThe Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy/i) as Mike, a clerk at a failing video store in a rundown New Jersey neighborhood. When his friend Jerry (Jack Black), who's been magnetised in a power station accident, wipes all of the videotapes blank, the two of them decide to recreate the movies themselves rather than face the store's owner (Danny Glover). p/pThe pure charm of iBe Kind Rewind/i can't be captured in that spare plot synopsis. The blend of the movie's great cast (which also includes Mia Farrow, Melonie Diaz of iAmerican Son/i, and Sigourney Weaver) and pitch-perfect writing and direction from writer-director Michel Gondry (director of iEternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind/i, writer-director of iThe Science of Sleep/i) culminates in a truly delightful movie--sweet without being saccharine, richly comic without irony or sarcasm (which, given the presence of Black, is surprising), sentimental without losing sight of the hard edges of life. Mos Def turns in a standout performance, deeply sympathetic without a moment of grandstanding. An absolutely winning film. i--Bret Fetzer/i

5 out of 5 stars very unique   September 7, 2008

This very much reminds me of a Cohen brothers film. It`s very unique and thought provoking and full of laughs.

5 out of 5 stars creative and funny.   October 31, 2008

Quite simply this is a very original, creative and funny film and as such is a refreshing break from most American comedy. Michel Gondry is a very special director who relishes quirky ideas and creative visual effects that are usually achieved using everyday, mundane items. The visual creativity and comic whit in this film is endearing and everyone I know who has seen it really enjoyed it. I find it hard to understand how people couldn't enjoy this film.

5 out of 5 stars More From The Wonderful World Of Michel Gondry   May 29, 2009

I've been captivated by the world of Michel Gondry since I first came across his distinctive music video work. This is a man with a very unique cinematic vision, something he has very successfully expanded into full length cinema. "Be Kind Rewind", his third major film, is essentially a film about the love of film making, with a sub plot about stoytelling and community. br / br /The characters who populate this world are good natured and simple people. As such the performances come across as a little stylised - a facet that takes a little getting used to - and a fact which makes or breaks the enjoyment of the film. One result is that Gondry gets a more muted performance out of Jack Black. It's not that muted but compared to some of his other performances it is less loud. This is obviously a shot at something of a bigger audience for Gondry and choosing Black is a bold choice. br / br /The story's premise is a little far fetched - Black becomces super magnetised and wipes all the films in a video store blank - but the solution is pure Gondry: make home-made shorter versions of the original films. Essentially this is an arty film with a "let's put on a show" kind of climax. Designed to give Gondry the chance to show the world more of his brilliantly oddball vision of the world. Here the results will either delight you or infuriate, depending on if you can stomach the sheer strangeness of the conceit. br / br /Mos Def and Melonie Diaz provide his support in making the films and are neat foils to Black. Danny Glover, as the owner of the video store, is nicely used as a man out of step with the modern world. The video store customers also seem a little out of step and Mia Farrow is particularly good in a role which echoes some of her best work with Woody Allen. br / br /It is a strange little film, with all the characters seemingly as out of step with the modern world as the derelict video store they frequent. Gondry clearly wants things more simple, pleasures to be on a smaller scale, and a sense of community peppers the film's climax with a rather nostalgic beauty. br / br /This is Gondry's vision and his style is not for everyone. You need to suspend more than a little disbelief, but if you are able to do this then this film sits nicely with his excellent "The Science Of Sleep". If you want something as undemanding as plain popcorn, steer well clear. This is something very individual, strangely wonderful, and very Gondry.

4 out of 5 stars Get Sweded   April 16, 2008

VHS is pretty much dead now, but it has one characteristic that "Be Kind Rewind" revolves around: expose it to magnetism, and it dies. br / br /So you can probably guess what happens in Michel Gondry's fourth movie, and his first foray into all-out comedy. It has some plot holes and a rather bizarre premise, but there's a warm, funny little heart buried in the kooky antics and wild remakes of every movie from "Ghostbusters" to "Lord of the Rings." br / br /Be Kind Rewind is an ancient video store, and supposedly the birthplace of unknown jazz legend Fats Waller. It's also due to be razed for a new block of condos -- so store owner Mr. Fletcher (Danny Glover) goes on a scouting trip for a week, leaving his conscientious clerk Mike (Mos Def) in charge. br / br /Unfortunately local weirdo Jerry (Jack Black) tries to destroy a local power plant, because he believes it's controlling his brain. Instead he gets fried, and his body becomes a walking electromagnet -- which they only discover after he's wandered through the store, erasing all the old tapes. Even worse, a regular customer (Mia Farrow) wants "Ghostbusters" by that evening. br / br /So Mike and Jerry hurriedly shoot their OWN version of the movie, with the help of Alma (Melonie Diaz) and soon they find that their "Sweded" movies have a growing fanbase, and they are town celebrities. But the demolition deadline is approaching, and Hollywood lawyers are threatening them for copyright infringement -- will the town's new devotion to these quirky "Sweding" moviemakers help them stay. br / br /Michel Gondry's movies are always set in "real life," but with a few drops of the unreal -- memory erasure, waking surrealist dreams, that kind of thing. And even though "Be Kind Rewind" is set in a grimy, shabby New Jersey town, it has the same delightfully unreal quality -- it's a genial buddy comedy where literally anything can happen. br / br /I'll admit, there are some moments that don't entirely work like the awkward "this town is a swamp" exchange, and a couple plot holes (where did the infringement lawyers go?). And that whole magnetized body fluids thing was just gross. br / br /But it has plenty of physical and verbal comedy ("Iloveyou Iloveyou we'relovers kissme!"), ranging from train hijacks to a break-in at a DVD rental store. And the entertaining movie becomes sidesplitting when our heroes start shooting a ghastly no-budget "Ghostbusters" with fishing rods, tinsel, and bags of goo. Also "Robocop," "2001," "Rush Hour 2," "Driving Miss Daisy" and several others -- all with no budget, borrowed costumes, cardboard sets, and a cast of rank amateurs. br / br /Gondry is obviously having a roaring good time lampooning Hollywood blockbusters. But he also injects some deeper currents into what could have been a one-joke movie -- there's a bittersweet subplot about the possibility of losing the store that has brought a community together. Yeah, it's supposed to tug at the heartstrings, but it really does work. br / br /One particularly nice touch is that the movie ends -- and is punctuated by -- scenes of a very low-budget, old-looking biopic of Fats Waller. Initially it just seems like another conceit, but it turns out to be very important to the plot. br / br /Black is a delight as the insane Jerry, brimming with manic energy -- in one scene, he encases himself in aluminum foil. Mos Def's Mike is more pleasant and low-key as the responsible boy-next-door type, and Danny Glover is outstanding as the paternal, gravel-voiced Mr. Fletcher. Diaz is also quite solid as a vague love interest/codirector/costar; and keep an eye out for Sigourney Weaver in a small cameo. br / br /Michel Gondry's fourth full-length film is a big-hearted, mildly bittersweet little comedy, with the slightly unreal quality you expect from his films. I want the Sweded "Be Kind Rewind!"

4 out of 5 stars A bit of a mess, but worth your attention anyway   April 7, 2008

How's this for a high concept movie: br /"A 'Batteries Not Included' remake, but instead of flying robots this time the community is saved by youtube videos!" br /Just like the home made content on Youtube, this film veers from the brilliant and ingenius to underwhelming to down right crass. But over the course of the whole movie there was enough of the good stuff to ensure I enjoyed my self and to make me feel like watching it again. br /What works are the excellent 'home made' parodies of block buster movies and the final fictional documentary film. br /What doesn't work is the plot. It makes very little sense and leaves some big unanswered questions; what exactly is the relationship between Mos Def and Danny Glovers character? And the guy who runs the other DVD store, is he related to them too? Why has his wife thrown him out? What the heck are those stupid micro chips stuck on the VHS tapes about? Do they save the store in the end or not? Does the romantic interest ever go anywhere? br /This movie asks the audience to be a little too forgiving of its' incoherent plot. But it's the home made videos that are the reason to see it and they do not disappoint.
