| Customer Reviews: An "arty" film the critics love - you'll hate it! June 15, 2008 D. Clarke 2 out of 11 found this review helpful
br /Oh dear.
br /I keep doing this - buying critically acclaimed films, and hating them.
br /This is dire.
br /The incidental music drives you nuts (arty) the plot jumps timelines all over the place (arty) it's main character is a sulky teenager (arty)and there is a FATAL (pun intended) continuity error in the films only plot line.
br /I waited until it got going - it never does, the ending is a disgrace, and to be honest, the main lead is so sulky and broody I just didn't CARE what happened to him.
br /I thought I'd never see a worse film than Deathproof - I only had to wait a week....
br /If you are a right-on Guardian reader and want to be down with the kids than go right ahead.
br /Otherwise - avoid.

Terrible November 6, 2009 Sidney Carton (Edinburgh, United Kingdom) I typically like Gus Van Sant's films. Gerry, Elephant, and My Own Private Idaho are fantastic.
br /
br /I don't even know that this should be classified as a film, to be perfectly honest. If so, pacing no longer applies to film. What we have hear is a very simple story broken apart by long, slow ultra-artistic shots of skateboarders and teenagers walking along doing nothing at all. In slow motion.
br /
br /It's like Gus Van Sant thought, "That technique worked well in Elephant, so I'll just reuse it in this other film, only focus even longer on really bad teenage actors doing uninteresting, monotonous things. Or doing nothing at all." At least in Elephant, we knew the background story enough so the long shots of teenagers were actually somewhat significant to the story.
br /
br /I turned Paranoid Park off after 30 minutes. I'd had enough.
