Amazon.co.uk Review
The latest romantic comedy from the Working Title production line, IDefinitely, Maybe/I got a little forgotten on its original cinematic release in early 2008. Yet beneath the covers here is a smart, enjoyable film, that does Ryan Reynolds' potential as a romantic lead no harm whatsoever. P The story of IDefinitely, Maybe/I is mainly told in flashback, as Reynolds' daughter in the film (played by ILittle Miss Sunshine/I's Abigal Breslin) quizzes him as to how he met his mother, who he's in the process of getting a divorce from. Reynolds' tale follows three failed romances, and the film holds back on revealing the answer to its mysteries until pretty much the final reel. P Deftly written and directed by Adam Brooks (who previously had scribing credits on IPractical Magic/I, IWimbledon/I and IBridget Jones: The Edge Of Reason/I, among others), IDefinitely, Maybe/I has several factors in its corner. Firstly, the script is witty, well layered, and engaging. Secondly, the casting is good, too. Reynolds is in good form here, and Elizabeth Banks, Isla Fisher and Rachel Weisz turn in fine performances as the three women in his life. And finally, while only slightly outstaying its welcome, IDefinitely, Maybe/I achieves a satisfying balance of wit and romance, and then manages to squeeze in a great Kevin Kline cameo on top. Can't be bad. P It may not be talked about in the same breath as other Working Title successes such as INotting Hill/I and ILove Actually/I, yet IDefinitely, Maybe/I is very worthy of DVD discovery. With good rewatch value too, it's a recommended buy. --ISimon Brew/I

5 out of 5 stars Funny, warm, but not your average rom-com   June 8, 2008

We went to see this on its cinema release - I was not at all convinced, it really sounded like a typical romantic comedy. Not that I have a problem with that, but usually wouldn't really bother to go and see it. As it happened, it's a cleverly written 'love mystery', where a little girl is desperate to know how her parents got together, even though they are now getting divorced. Abigail Breslin is great as always - remember Little Miss Sunshine? - but all the main characters sparkle with a witty script and good storyline. br /It's bittersweet in many places, seeing how easy it is for life to get in the way of relationships, or for the timing to be wrong, but I absolutely promise you will finish the film with a warm glow for the rest of the day. It's not cloying, or saccharine, and gives a real impression of just how complicated love can be - but also how enriching and life-affirming.

5 out of 5 stars This is how Rom-Com's Should Be   September 21, 2008

Firstly, i'm a guy, and although i'm not aversed to the rom-com, i prefer the "blow things up" catagory. Nevertheless, my girlfriend and i got this and watched it on DVD last night and i have to say, WHAT A FANTASTIC FILM. br / br /It's interesting, insightful, funny. I think i spent a lot of time on the edge of the sofa, interested to what happens next. No Spoiler here, but the end is how films should finish. I finished watching this film and instantly all i wanted to do was watch it again. br / br /If you want a great film that you could probably watch a number of times and never get bored, BUY THIS FILM. br / br /ohh and if you are a guy, the presence of Isla Fisher and Rachel Wiesz is never going to be a bad thing.

Finally, a romantic comedy that breaks the boundaries of clichéd romantic flicks and has enjoyable characters, a plot that is exciting, mysterious and funny and with plenty of twists to justify the genre that is often slated for it's predictability. br / br /Ryan Reynolds (Just Friends) stars as Will Hayes, a middle aged man who is coming close to a divorce and when his daughter asks about her mother, Will takes a look back at the past years of his life. br / br /Don't judge the film by the trailer because there is so much more on offer. Though the trailer for the film would give a sense of predictability and humour, the film was a delightful surprise with its great precise dialogue and dramatic scenarios, giving an account of true realism, of real life and its complications with married people, and couples. br / br /The plot is consistent with excellent twists and turns as Will dives deep into his relationship past, and there is always that great creativity about who it could be. br / br /Unlike a lot of other rom-coms, this 2008 film actually invites the audience into it, trying to make them guess and wonder who Will may end up with, and who the mother of Mai could be, which makes the film very unique and rather not the same old "Will he get it together with her?" There are a few clichés there, but still it maintains a more realistic drama approach to differ it which made me enjoy it. br / br /There are a few great one liners and a few chucklesome moments, not as funny as other romantic comedies, but that isn't the point of this film. The point was trying to maintain a realistic approach of relationships, which it did spot on. br / br /There is great acting from all involved which goes brilliantly with the direction and settings used by director Brooks. br / br /Other issues which were intriguing were the political side, with the election of Bill Clinton, and the views of all the characters in regards to him, which give the film different layers and points to consider. br / br / br /9/10

I went to this film with a friend (male!) and we both loved it. The actors are absolutely believable and young Abigail Breslin is simply charming. It's really worth the money, go buy it ;)

5 out of 5 stars 5 stars!!   September 21, 2008

I went to see this film in the cinema and loved it so much that i was ready to buy it on DVD the day it came out. I, like most others am familiar with the rom-com genre, guy meets girl, complication ensues, guy makes romantic gesture and they live happily ever after. It's been done! This film completly reinvents the genre and is a million miles away from the likes of 27 Dresses or Sex and the City. You really are never sure what's comming next or whats going to happen, and even if you think you do, your probably wrong! br / br /The cast is steller, brilliant performances from leads Ryan and Isla, as well as sharp and witty writing, the film pretty much ticks all the boxes. I would give it my full recomendation and if you havn't seen it yet i suggest you do so.
