Five men known only by fictional names for reasons of identity protection are subject to a failed bank robbery. Members of the gang begin to suspect that an undercover cop is amongst them...... br / br /We don't get to see the most important element of the film which is the robbery itself. Instead Reservoir Dogs concentrates on the ugly aftermath of a failed heist and its complications. It's a study of the male ego (its existence, limitations and frailties) and dealings in dangerous situations. br / br /We do get to see the planning behind the heist and the background to all the characters, but not in that order. Many will expect an elaborate build up to the heist as other films in the same category depict, but we don't get that either. The events unravel very slowly, and in segments. There are flashbacks of all characters as the film progresses. In these flashbacks we learn about their origins and begin to decide which one of them is the double-crosser and also whether we have sympathy for them or not. This is done by comparing their past with current events. br / br /Pulp fiction focuses on characters other films didn't e.g. henchmen, bosses wife etc and that was the main concept of the film. It turned such characters into the lead roles. Reservoirs Dogs works on a similar level. Even though the heist is the main element of the film; QT decides to focus on elements which are normally perceived irrelevant to the film or insubordinate to other events. This makes it a very risky film, as Tarantino has to tackle the conformity set by years of standard, text book film-making by other filmmakers. However, the gamble is paid off as Reservoir Dogs remains engaging and enjoyable, and the innovation actually enhances the storytelling. br / br /There is a great deal of hand held camera work and the film takes place almost entirely in a warehouse. It's an effective low budget film which revolves mainly around improvised conversations. Such conversations take time to unravel, but as a viewer we appreciate them due to the idea behind them. Steve Buscemi is brilliant and proves he's the best supporting actor around, but all performances are deliberately underplayed in a film that gets better on each viewing. br / br /Tarantino has created a `modern day' Dog Day Afternoon. The difference being that the latter was about the viewer witnessing the heist going wrong; Reservoir Dogs is about the aftermath of a heist which has already gone wrong. However both films concentrate on the persons involved in the heist, hence QT's films are ultimately about people. He brings out the quirks and the funny sides to his characters. br / br /Reservoir dogs is an important film. We are introduced to QTs way of film-making, the very product which brought him such fame. He borrows from Martin Scorsese but adds other elements e.g. script and narrative. It's not as big or as accomplished as Pulp Fiction, infact it can be seen as amateurish and a prototype in an experiment. That aside, it is still more accessible, as charming and more gripping. br / br /Pulp Fiction is a better film but Reservoir Dogs is more ground-breaking purely because it came out before it, and on it's release it was the first independent film, hence creating independent cinema. Griffith, Wells, Hitchcock, Scorsese - and now lets add Tarantino to that list.
