Amazon.co.uk The premise is delicious: A young, by-the-book FBI agent (Colin Hanks) is given his new, highest-profile assignment yet--spying on his own mother (Meg Ryan). My iMom's New Boyfriend/i is a romantic comedy (long on both romance and comedy), giving Ryan her first film in a long time where she can take the laughs and run with them. Viewers will remember, with a grateful sigh, why she long reigned as the queen of American romantic comedy. Ryan plays Marty, devoted mom, who last saw her son, Henry (Hanks), three years ago when she was unhealthy, coarse, and overweight (looking like she might have borrowed Monica's fat suit from Friends). When Henry returns home from his secret op, fiancée (Selma Blair) in tow, Marty's still coarse, but has become a babe with a healthy libido ("Oh Henry, lighten up!" is Marty's oft-repeated refrain). Henry is horrified, but his girlfriend, Emily, is entranced. In fact, some of the film's best chemistry is between these two gifted actresses, as they spark and feed off each other's energy. When Marty takes up with the sultry Tommy (Antonio Banderas), Henry gets the ultimate "TMI" assignment: spying on his mom and her honey, suspected in an art theft ring. Hanks squirms convincingly, Banderas smoulders, and Ryan truly sparkles, unleashing her wacky side. If the plot has a few potholes, it doesn't matter because the cast is stellar and has such magnetism. By sheer determination and talent, the ensemble delivers laughs and poignancy. Extras include deleted scenes (and a few memorable bloopers), and a behind-the-scenes featurette on filming on location in northern Louisiana. i--A.T. Hurley/i

| Customer Reviews: Light, watchable comedy February 21, 2009 Dodster (UK) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Not the best movie I've ever watched, but by no means the worst.
br /A dotting son goes off to college to become an FBI agent, leaving behind his over dependant 30 something mother (Meg Ryan).
br /He comes back a fully qualified agent with a FBI fiance in tow, to find his dependant, overweight mother transformed into a slimmed down 'hot mamma' who has an action packed life of her own.
br /His mother then falls for international art thief, Antonio Banderas.
br /The FBI find out, leaving the son with some difficult decisions...
br /Some good laughs and if you are in the mood for light, escapist comedy, this fits the bill.

I am a great fan of Meg Ryan and have collected most of her work, but this I'm afraid, I could not recommend to anyone who wasn't a fan.
br /The main problem being Colin Hanks. His acting is poor and as he is a major player in this movie, it totals up to a lot of poor acting.
br /The story line is acceptable, the script reasonable and Ryan and Antonio Banderas are competent in their respective roles, but unfortunately, Hanks seems to have no idea how to cope with his portrayals of Ryan's son and as an FBI agent.
br /For what it is, I enjoyed the film, but not for the right reasons.
br /Take Meg out of it and I would have struggled to give it 1 star!!

lacking in jokes and humour August 12, 2008 dan the fan (england,uk) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
A federal agent is asked by his boss to spy on his mum ( meg ryan) who dates an infamous art thief( antonio banderas). Not that interesting a story and didn't make me laugh much. This is one of those films that relies on one funny scenario ( son spies on mum ) for its whole impact.
br /Not enough firepower on the joke front.
Watchable, but no real belly laughs December 23, 2008 Maria Stegenwalner (St. Brelade, Jersey United Kingdom) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This film suffers from a lack of credible interaction between pretty much any of the main characters - that's partly because so much time had to be given over to set up the 'Mom goes from sad loser to hot totty' scenario. There was so much more that could have been done with these characters once the main story got going. However, I still liked the way in which Banderas is able to send himself up, and Selma Blair is always good value, and I whiled away a couple of hours watching the film without serious incident! I wasn't keen on the part played by Meg Ryan, though, she is normally SO good, but I don't think the script or the direction allowed her to make the most of the part.
br /Basically, what I'm saying is: this film is OK. It's watchable, but not an outstanding film by any means.
