5 out of 5 stars Realism with a Capital `R'   May 30, 2008
Mr. RB FORTUNE-WOOD (UK)

Alison Murray (writer and director) gives us a film with faultless music, filming, scripting, directing and acting. Ellen Page, actress of protagonist Sherry, better known for her appearance in `X-Men: The Last Stand' as Katherine `Kitty' Pryde, delivers an extraordinary performance in a gruelling part. The other cast, particularly Eric Thal playing menacingly believable Mansonesque cult leader Harry, were also superb. Rowan Oliver's soundtrack was wide ranging and always captured the atmosphere; as did Barry Stone's brutal cinematography. br / br /As an instrumental piece `Mouth to Mouth' is flawless; it captures the subtle treacheries of power relations and the commonplace madness of those that abuse them; it shows the perils of drug addiction; it delves graphically into sexual manipulation and outright rape and, unsurprisingly, it doesn't shy away from torture or murder either - all within a sickeningly plausible context. As an avid reader of la Marquis de Sade and a general enthusiast for anything psychologically, sociologically or philosophically dark not much seriously disturbs me; this film genuinely shocked me and it did so entirely because of its realism - this is social realism at its must ugly and naked. br / br /That leads me to the final point; `Mouth to Mouth' is about the least entertaining film I have ever experienced. Despite the faultless soundtrack, filming, scripting, directing and acting there is no aesthetic merit; every part goes towards making an intentionally ugly and monstrous whole. I've given this film five stars because it is what it is; not fun, but a shockingly honest portrayal of a particular kind of social evil. If you buy this film expecting anything else then you are in for something nasty, but if you want an unremittingly painful 101 minutes of faultlessly produced ugly realism, then this film delivers perfectly.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting, haunting, touching   July 11, 2008

No need to go over the synopsis again, there are enough reviews here to do that; yet it is an interesting film, with some very believable, haunting and touching sequences. The beginning is raw and keeps you guessing but by the time you reach the end you're already there. Promising but pulls it's punches.

5 out of 5 stars Definitely one to see   September 24, 2008
O. M. Carey-Jones (UK)
I watched Mouth to Mouth a couple of nights ago and found it to be a powerful film with outstanding performances, especially from Ellen Page but also from the other lead actors. The film engaged me emotionally to an unusual degree as it depicted the mental and physical abuse of a young woman at the hands of a manipulative cult/gang leader. This film is definitely one to see, not only for the great portrayal delivered by Ellen Page but also for the strong and moving story which engages throughout.

4 out of 5 stars Mouth to mouth will leave you speechless   July 16, 2008

The reason for watching this is simple, for ellen page's performance. Apparently his was done a little before hard candy came out and it's not hard to see why the director of Hard candy chose Ellen to be his muse in hard candy. She is a born actress and the roles that she takes are well worth viewing. Although the film is slow she keeps you staring at the screen when ever she is on screen. The depiction of a teenage girl's life is well documentated and expressed with some power behind it. br /if you wanna see great acting watch this.

4 out of 5 stars Unsatisfying ending but otherwise a dizzy thrill   May 18, 2008

This is quite a tense film to watch. br / br /The basic premise is "all that glitters isn't gold". Ellen (Juno) Page's 'Bat' is attracted to a bohemian group who offer an alternative to the mundane reality of everyday life, but what seems like a good time - I say 'seems' because the good time they have looks out of control and terrifying to me, and the camera devices made me feel that - reveals a pseudo-cult where those who've submitted themselves feel the harshness of those exerting a facade of democratic control. br / br /The end is unsatisfying as it felt somewhat unresolved, but at the same time it was realistic. I don't think the plot itself is more important than the bonds (and broken bonds) between the characters and this is shown particularly in the animal-like touchy-feely behaviour of Mad Ax and his young brother Manson, later echoed between Mad Ax and Bat. br / br /What further twists the rebellion in the story is that Bat's mother joins the group after believing it's not such a bad place to be. Even the 'bad guy' of the film, Harry, cannot be fully hated. Though he does some awful things, he comes across as a bit of a '...Cuckoo's Nest' Nurse Ratched in that he believes he's doing things for the benefit of people. br / br /On special features things are sparse with just a trailer and a brief behind the scenes. br / br /It's a film worth watching but it's longevity is somewhat limited. It's a good cult film but not a masterpiece.
