4 out of 5 stars A downbeat gem that finishes upbeat   March 20, 2009

Jim is less lonesome than plain miserable. He does everything in lower case. He is left cold by everyone and everything around him, having failed at the only thing he thought had value. The film shows him progressing towards starting to care and finishes in a life-affirming manner. The film releases information slowly, keeping your interest and curiosity, but be warned: Casey Affleck is an understated actor and his character is downbeat and unsympathetic for much of the film. Liv Tyler is also understated, with a role in which she serves to rescue the hero from self-pity, without being particularly fleshed out. Patience and persistence with the film are however well rewarded.

Steve Buscemi directs Casey Affleck in a part that Steve Buscemi would once have been in. Depressed failed writer returns from New York to live with suicidal brother and bemused mum. After his brother's attempted suicide Jim is forced to work in ther family firm with his ne'er do well drug dealing uncle.Visiting his sick brother he encounters a nurse, Liv Tyler, and they end up having sex.Jim stays depressed. Jim coaches his brother's junior basketball team, bottom of their league, and fails to motivate them.Jim stays depressed.Jim's mum is arrested for drug dealing.Jim knows she is innocent and his uncle guilty, but he does nothing. But stays depressed. br / br /I like Steve Buscemi.I liked Trees Lounge, which he also directed.I like Casey Affleck and Liv Tyler. But overall I found this film too low key and depressing. It just didn't work for me.It's well acted and directed and there are some funny moments, but in the end I wanted to give Affleck a good smack.Playing someone with depression is a heavy load for any actor, but I think if Buscemi himself had played the part he could have pulled it off. He's too old for it now and although on the face of it this role should be perfect for Affleck he lacks Buscemi's quirky kind of charisma and the balance of the film tilts too much towards depressing. br / br /Not bad. Not sorry I watched it.A good enough US indie film, but I think I preferred Wristcutters, a similar film with a similar theme.Either way, I think if you like one you'll like the other.
