Amazon.co.uk Review
Loud, violent, and proudly derivative, the post-apocalyptic action-thriller iDoomsday/i is the latest from UK cult director Neil Marshall, who impressed horror fans with his previous efforts, iDog Soldiers/i and iThe Descent/i. Both pictures established Marshall as a director with a knack for reinventing well-worn genre pictures, but here, he seems more interested in stitching together favorite scenes and elements from established horror and science-fiction films. iEscape from New York/i is the main source for iDoomsday/i, though there are plenty of nods to iThe Road Warrior/i and its multitude of Italian-made carbon copies, as well as the zombie/plague subgenre; the lovely but impassive Rhona Mitra is the Snake Plissken-esque loner sent by police (represented by Bob Hoskins) to infiltrate Scotland, which has descended into anarchy following a viral outbreak.p The disease has surfaced in London (now a walled city), and Mitra is dispatched to find a scientist who may possess a cure. Marshall's vision of Scotland in ruins brings together the punk/modern primitive costume design of George Miller's iMad Max/i trilogy with some eclectic homegrown elements (knights on horseback defending a gang leader's castle), and while these touches are novel, the picture as a whole should ring overly familiar to any viewer who's spent time in the exploitation trenches during the past 25 years. Younger and less discerning audience members will undoubtedly enjoy the plentiful violence and gore, as well as the unbridled performances of the supporting cast, especially stuntwoman/actress Lee-Ann Liebenberg as the heavily tattooed Viper. --iPaul Gaita/i

5 out of 5 stars Escape from the New Glasgow Thunderdome   October 2, 2008

I think many reviewers are missing the point of this fantastic film. Its not a rip off of past cinematic glories, its a brilliant homage to many films, especially John Carpenter's Escape films, and George Miller's Mad Max triology. This is entirely intentional on Marshall's part. br /Its funny, gory, and action packed. Its a film that people are forgetting to make these days, a no brain joy ride of a movie that clearly loves the films it pays tribute to. br /Rhona Mitra's tough, wisecracking Major Sinclair is a female Snake Plisskin, and comes with trademark eyepatch. King of New Glasgow is psychotic Saul, who looks like an Exploited roadie, and comes complete with pet gimp. David'O'Hara's slimy Canesares is a mix of Keach and Van Cleef in the Escape films. Three examples of blatant homage, I think br /So, please ignore the negative reviews on here, and partake in one of the most enjoyable films you could wish to see. I'm certainly glad that I ignored the poor rep the film had, as I thought it was wonderful. An unqualified 5 out of 5

Dont expect oscar winning performances or a superb storyline thats totally original. However if you liked Mad Max, 28 Days later and Aliens just mix bits of all three and away you go. br / br /Nearly two hours worth of brain out sit back and let it wash over you entertainment. br / br /I loved it and her.

5 out of 5 stars Why are people so hard to please?   October 1, 2008

I simply cannot understand what is wrong with all the people here giving this film such low ratings. They are all comparing it to Dog Soldiers, from the same team, and other films aside. What relevance does that have, I wonder? It is its own film! Forget everything else, just focus on what's in front of you! I am a massive lover of films, especially violent films, I find they are a great way of chilling out and having a laugh with mates, and this film delivers that spectacularly! No gently, gently, softly, softly watery approach that so many films are going for these days! NO! This is a balls out, hard-core violent joy ride, fantastic casting, fantastic setting, and ingenius props and costumes. It makes for a fantastically entertaining night in to invite your mates over and just have a giggle. Forget all these sensible people who think they are film critics or some kind of politically important figure whose opinion matters, this isn't meant to be serious, it's FUN! Know what that is?

5 out of 5 stars Another excellent Neil Marshall film   November 15, 2008

Why do many people seem to think a film has to be analysed - what's wrong with watching a film and enjoying it purely for the entertainment value? br / br /Both my husband and I are big Neil Marshall fans and this film didn't disappoint at all. Afterall who would think of putting the completely over the top battle scene to Frankie goes to Hollywood's Two Tribes - genius! And need I mention the gorgeous Bentley - swoon! br / br /This was a brilliant homage and a refreshing change to all the remakes the Americans only seem to be able to make at the moment i.e. The Grudge, The Ring, One Last Call, Prom Night and coming soon Friday the 13th, Hellraiser etc etc etc - all of which probably had budgets beyond belief and some of which were not just remakes but direct rip offs of the original films. br / br /Support the British film industry for something more original.
