That's better! October 13, 2008 Neilio 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
This is definitely the definitive version of Dark City that everyone should see. After watching it for the first time I was amazed at how heavily edited the original version was especially in the beginning half of the movie. In this version the added pieces of narrative help flesh out the characters and keep the movie's pace consistent, without making it too long. I also noticed it's easier to hear the dialogue as the soundtrack has been toned down from the less dramatic scenes, and it seems that Jennifer Connelly is actually singing in this version, either that or they've improved the overdub. Overall this still remains (even more so now) one of my favourite movies of all time!
blew me away September 7, 2008 guitarman (UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I first saw this film on a scruffy old VHS tape borrowed from a friend. I wasn't expecting much, but I ended up watching it twice on the first day, and buying the DVD shortly afterwards.
br /I rank this in the same league as Blade Runner. I haven't seen the directors cut yet, but I'm willing to buy it just for the extra 11 minutes, let alone the commentaries.
br /One of those films you watch again and again.
br /Far, far better than the matrix.
forgotten gem April 18, 2009 2cleverbyhalf (somewhere in the future) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I never saw the original so can't comment if this is as much improved as other reviewers report. But as a complete sleeper of a film (geddit?) Dark City is a real treat. The comic/gothic/sci-fi/40s/50s design has been emulated a few times but is done here as well as anywhere else. The plot unravels at a great pace. The acting, script, direction and special effects are all way better than average.
br /My only gripes.. Rufus Sewell has mad eyes and Jennifer Connelly's main talents aren't nearly on show enough.
Top Film!! Must watch! August 5, 2008 Anies Hassan (London, UK) 4 out of 11 found this review helpful
This is a great film! Strangely ignored when it came out but we would not have "The Matrix" and a whole other genre of films with out this. It basically IS the matrix: Story, styling, concept etc. I look forward to seeing the directors cut!
THE GENIUS STRIKES AGAIN... August 24, 2009 Lou Almighty ...after THE CROW Alex Proyas delivers another visually brilliant film, which is quite clever as well with a very interesting story. If you liked the visuals of THE CROW and like strange yet intersting stories give this one a try.
