5 out of 5 stars Excellent Gritty Prison Movie   January 21, 2009

Watched this last night and was pleasantly surprised at how good it was. Dont let the tacky synopsis written by amazon put you off, this isnt some cheap 'Vin Diesel' style punch-fest, this is actually a very gruesome look at life in a top-security prison (albeit with some action movie elements thrown in). This is obviously no shawshank redemption but it is a well acted, enjoyable and believable movie. Highly recommended!.. Also couldn'd believe that John Smith, the mass murderer, was played by Val Kilmer.. he was completely unrecognisable! Anyway go buy this as its excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Total Brilliant Movie.   February 27, 2009

Okay so it may have Stephen Dorff that I totally fancy, it just sounded good and rented it out. The story begins with him killing a robber by accident which leads him to jail for a little while but to his horror, jail life ain't pretty and he soon changes from a sobbing man wanting freedom to a kicking butt machine with a shaven head and wanting justice on the corrputed cops watching this dangerous sport of fighting to their deaths. It's a total brilliant movie, I haven't been so gripped and wanting to know what happened at the end for a long time. This should have been noticed a lot more, not just stright to DVD. I couldn't believe that John was played by Val Kilmer, he was awesome and played his part really well. Stephen Dorff was also good, throwing charsmia and his acting talents right at you. I highly recommend this movie without doubt, totally gripping and awesome. 10 out of 10, five out of five stars for the whole thing.

5 out of 5 stars Kilmer Classic   May 9, 2009

This is my third attempt at writing a review of Felon in my previous two I criticised what I considered to be a fairly misleading synopsis of the film by Amazon. Then low and behold my review was never printed. br /So here goes attempt number three. br /Felon is no dumb action film. The lead Steven Dorf is excellent as the honest man who in the eyes of the law went to far in defending his wife, child and home against a robber. He ends up in a maximum security prison where he soon falls foul of the corrupt guards. Three things set Felon apart from your typical prison film. One it also focuses on those left behind on the outside. Notably Dorf's wife as she struggles to hang on to their home and pay the bills. Two the bulk of the inmates in the film are actual gang members thus giving the film a genuine sense of realism. Three is Val Kilmer as "Wade's " cell mate and mass murderer John Smith. Kilmer gives the film real depth and is wholly credible as the old lag who takes "Wade" after initial misgivings under his tattooed wing and teaches him how to survive in the "Shu" Secure Housing Unit. Its a shame Felon was never given a theatrical release as it might have done well at the cinema. As for the dvd there is an excellent documentary but nothing much else. I gave it five stars because Val Kilmers outstanding performance merited a star all of its own. This film will certainly put you of going to jail.
