5 out of 5 stars A truly beautiful movie which pulls at all your heart strings...   January 25, 2009

A friend got me to watch this movie and I started with some reluctance to watch it thinking "oh god not another period drama". br / br /The film follows a family through the years and soon has you bonding with the characters so much so that without giving away the rollercoaster plots you will laugh and cry. I actually did find myself in tears come the end of the movie as it is a very spritual, tearjerker of a film with some knockout performances from Irons, Streep, Close and Ryder. br / br / br /Actually I would go as far as saying that Close and Ryder both surprised me as their roles really do allow them to shine as fine actors. As for the relationship between Irons and Streep well the word "authentic" comes to mind as they make a great on-screen couple and although Irons plays a devilish, cold-hearted man his love for Streep's character come the end will bring you to tears. Hats off also to the wardrobe and make-up department which ensure the characters believably age before your eyes. br / br / br /THIS IS A MOVIE WITH A MESSAGE. IT HAS HEART AND SOUL. FOR ME IT IS ONE OF THE BEST FILMS I HAVE SEEN OF LATE AND A TRUE GEM THAT SEEMINGLY WAS OVERLOOKED BY THE MOVIE WORLD SOME 10 YEARS AGO WHEN IT WAS MADE.

4 out of 5 stars Family saga   August 14, 2009

I really enjoyed the book. With a film, I felt it was very fast-moving. Thnking about it, the book could probably be made into a series - it could then concentrate more on Clara's unusual gift, her relationship with her uncle (the episode completely cut out from the film, the development of a relationship between Clara's daughter and Pedro Tercero Garcia.

The one star rating is for this DVD release and not related to the film itself, which I like a lot. br / br /One of the best aspects of "The House of the Spirits" is its superb cinematography. Why why why bring this to DVD in letterbox format? It's a recent DVD release, so what excuse does the studio have for doing this? I doubt the viewable picture is even half the height of my widescreen TV screen. It really is like looking through a letterbox. Absolute waste!!!! Of course Amazon do not state whether or not this is an anamorphic transfer, so I had to buy it to find out. br / br /The Dutch release is anamorphic, but in other respects is a poor quality transfer with many visible artifacts and picture instabilities. br / br /The much older American release is also letterboxed, and severely shortened. br / br /One day, there might be a decent transfer that does "The House of the Spirits" full justice. I continue to wait......
