5 out of 5 stars Errr... I hadn't heard of a donkey punch before   October 26, 2008

...but much as I'll avoid that particular bit of 'fun', this film is a definite must watch. Hugely accessible, good looking, and inventive as the nasty turn in it just gets nastier... and nastier. Watched this at the cinema this summer having dragged a group of mates along and thankfully, despite looking at me like I was slightly odd beforehand (perhaps they knew what it was) they all agreed that it was a great horror film, even those who aren't really fans of the genre normally. So there. Buy Donkey Punch, just don't partake!

5 out of 5 stars Great original and hugely enjoyable horror/thriller!   October 17, 2008

I absolutely loved this film...it plays with sex and violence and blood in the way that genre movies of this sort should, yet it also has a sense of originality and truly stands out when compared to other recent slasher/horror/gore films. br / br /The film utilizes its setting and characters perfectly to create some truly memorable sequences from the young talented and relatively unknown cast. First time director Olly Blackburn and writer David Bloom appear to be very promising filmmakers as they successfully play with a well known format of horror storytelling and make it seem unique and fresh (no doubt this is helped by the cast). In this way they make what could seem and what sounds like a ridiculous idea really work and as viewers there is lots of entertainment to be had with this. br / br /The film also contains a great contemporary soundtrack featuring artists such as The Knife, Pete, Bjorn and John and Justice Vs. Simian. br / br /The sexy scenes are very sexy and the gory scenes are very gory, making this film hugely enjoyable and should appeal to a wider audience as well as fans of horror and gore! br / br /If you dont know what a donkey punch is then its time to find out!

5 out of 5 stars BLUEY BOY   April 10, 2009

Im caught on the brink between 1 star or 5 stars. This depends wholly on whether the character Blue was a joke or not. If he was totally satirical then this is one of the best films ive seen in ages. If not then the writer has had no interaction with young people for decades, and is simply creating a main character with scraps of teen jargon heard on the bus. The rest of the film was pretty good, good setting, grizzly, really simple plot which left the attention wisely to tension and building involvement. As i say, Blue could make all this invalid if he is not a total joke..... but i dont see how any writer could be that ignorant, but played marvelously if he IS designed to be taken with a sack of salt. Sea salt, the kind that hasnt even been ground

5 out of 5 stars Bring on Ibiza!   November 12, 2008

Set in southern Spain, this movie is soaked in sun, sex, drugs...and blood! It brought me right back to my summers in Ibiza...minus the flare and outboard motor scenes. Don't miss it- a lot of fun and possibly the next British cult movie.

4 out of 5 stars Doesn't have the punch to pip skins for teenage lives   January 22, 2009

3 girls meet a group of guys in a club whilst on holiday. The guys take them onto their yacht where a terrible accident during sex causes suspicion and tension amongst them. br / br /28 Days Later and its sequel 28 weeks proved Britain can do horror with their sharp representation of zombies and fast styled thrilling action and devastating ratio of death in context of the country's population. br /Donkey Punch further promotes the dramatic concept of death by encoding 7 teens and stylizing the idea on what should be a fun filled experience. br / br /Opening with three young girls on holiday and looking to explore the local bars and such may be ordinary but the minimal dialogue and the focus on the settings helps differ from convention and achieves a high realism. Many films promote all the dialogue as essential but this 2008 picture gives all realism in account of the story's context, if occasionally predictable. br / br /Drugs, sex, drama, this isn't as Skins as it would hope. The blood thirsty side of the narrative places it more into horror, but then there is not nearly enough action to posses such a genre. This is a psychological drama filled with teens living their lives in a fun filled manner we have expected thanks to such films like Kidulthood and TV show Skins. But a drastic turn during sex has everyone's heads rolling and the film explores human emotions relating to death and how to approach the situation. The drastic turn of events is good, if not as tense and exciting as it had the potential to be. Oliver Blackburn's stylised direction works wonders and after viewing, I'm wondering how the direction would have benefited from a faster scripted narrative. br / br /The acting is far from brilliant but then this wasn't challenged to be an Oscar contender, more a drama promoting the concept of teen violence and lives. No, Donkey Punch gets by on a realistic script. Many critics and reviews I have read seem to dislike the script and the lack of action. Lack of action is more on many levels as it shows this isn't a run of the mill horror thriller concerned with dazzling special effects. Its purpose is to explore mindsets and entertain through its hard decisions and dramatic taste. br / br /The vivid sex scenes at the beginning give the film that erotic twist to add the dramatic consequences to the narrative, and well directed, looking extremely real and will have eyebrows raising. br / br /Whereas there is a lack of action, Donkey Punch is still a fast flowing thriller that does well exploring the mindset of teenagers, but doesn't have the punch to pip Skins br / br /8/10
