Amazon.co.uk Review
iSeason 1/ibr Pulling few punches and garnering its fair share of headlines as a result, The Tudors is a controversial, yet compelling period piece, that dramatically tells the story of the early years of King Henry VIII. Not for nothing, though, has it attracted its fair share of awards attention. For iThe Tudors/i is a complex drama, and not one to simplify its storylines. The young Henry, for instance, is exploring his muddled romances and his insecurities, against the challenges his kingdom is facing. Itrsquo;s a plate-full for him to deal with, and in the hands of a superb performance from Jonathan Rhys Meyers--a real revelation in the role--as the young Henry, itrsquo;s all vividly and skillfully knitted together. pBut The Tudors isnrsquo;t just about its central character, for therersquo;s a terrific supporting cast at work too. Sam Neillrsquo;s Cardinal Wolsey, Jeremy Northamrsquo;s Thomas More and Natalie Dormerrsquo;s Ann Boleyn are just some who earn plaudits here. Behind the camera therersquo;s the pen of Elizabeth writer Michael Hirst at work, and he too deserves much credit, clearly getting his teeth into the fascinating subject matter./p piThe Tudors/i is, undoubtedly, a graphic production, and earns its 15 certificate comfortably. Itrsquo;s also been knocked for the liberties it takes with its history when putting its story across, with some justification. But itrsquo;s also most certainly terrific television, mixing in high production values with strong performances. In short, the ten episodes here will simply have you thirsting for the next series. Not before yoursquo;ve re-watched iSeason One/i a few times, though... --iJon Foster /i piSeason 2/ibr iThe Tudors: Season 2/i begins with all the passion, violence and dark intrigue of the award-winning first series. King Henry (the dashing Jonathan Rhys Meyers) has appointed himself head of the Church of England. Meanwhile, upon the insistence of Anne Boleyn (Natalie Dormer), Henry breaks all contacts with Katherine and the noble Queen is banished from her court. Furthermore, a cook is blackmailed into poisoning a high-ranking bishop--then boiled alive for his crime. The Reformation has begun.

5 out of 5 stars Series 1 2 The Tudors   March 23, 2009

What an amazing series. Buying Series 1 2 from Amazon was the best value and I have so enjoyed seeing them again. Watching something as elaborate as The Tudors for the second time allows you to concentrate on the story and not just on the costumes and settings. Brilliant package!

5 out of 5 stars A brilliant look at this era.   February 9, 2009

This show is brilliant, with the first series getting better and better as it went on. Rhys Meyers portrays the character of Henry VIII perfectly with Dormer doing a brilliant job playing Anne Boleyn. A must have for any history fans.

Bought this as a Christmas present for my brother-in-law and he is over the moon with it. I do have to say, it is not my kind of entertainment but he has said it is an execellent programme would recommend it to everyone who likes this era.

This is hands down the best value DVD collection I have ever bought. br / br /Each episode is like a mini film, the quality is fantastic, the acting is incredible, costumes are fabulously intricate and the script is enthralling. br / br /I bought this DVD knowing I would be lying low recovering from surgery for a few days and wanted something longer than a 2 hour film to keep me occupied. I had no idea I would be glued to the set, watching episode after episode back to back over the course of the few days. And as soon as I had got to the end I restarted from episode 1 again. br / br /Jonathan Rhys-Myers' Henry VIII is dark, exciting, attractive and very intense. The rest of the casting is perfect, including the sultry and provocative Anne Boleyn who manages to capture the King's heart and play him for her and her families advancement. br / br /This is a visual treat, and provides an insight into the history and politics of the era with characters like Cardinal Wollsey, Thomas Moore, Oliver Cromwell, Henry VII, Anne Boleyn, Katherine of Aaragon, and the courts of France, Spain and Portugal.

I am a fan of historical films - and I can only say that I have completely enjoyed the series and looking forward to more of the same. I did though sometimes find that Rhys Meyers, as lovely as he is and as good as an actor as he is, did not, for me, project the 'strength', that I have always felt that Henry VIII must have had, but then that's just my personal feeling - and would not see it as a point to put anyone off this series, which I really think is a Must See. br / br / br / br / br /
