Amazon.co.uk Review The most successful invigoration of a cinematic franchise since iBatman Begins/i, iCasino Royale/i offers a new Bond identity. Based on the Ian Fleming novel that introduced Agent 007 into a Cold War world, iCasino Royale/i is the most brutal and viscerally exciting James Bond film since Sean Connery left Her Majesty's Secret Service. Meet the new Bond; not the same as the old Bond. Daniel Craig gives a galvanising performance as the freshly minted double-0 agent. Suave, yes, but also a "blunt instrument," reckless and possessed with an ego that compromises his judgment during his first mission to root out the mastermind behind an operation that funds international terrorists. In classic Bond film tradition, his global itinerary takes him to far-flung locales, including Uganda, Madagascar, the Bahamas (that's more like it) and Montenegro, where he is pitted against his nemesis in a poker game, with hundreds of millions in the pot. The stakes get even higher when Bond lets down his armour by falling in love with Vesper (Eva Green), the ravishing banker's representative fronting him the money./p pFor longtime fans of the franchise, iCasino Royale/i offers some retro kicks. Bond wins his iconic Aston Martin at the gaming table, and when a bartender asks if he wants his martini "shaken or stirred," he disdainfully replies, "Do I look like I give a damn?". There's no Moneypenny or "Q," but Dame Judi Dench is back as the exasperated M who, one senses, admires Bond's "bloody cheek." A Bond film is only as good as its villain, and Mads Mikkelsen as Le Chiffre, who weeps blood, is a sinister dandy. From its punishing violence and virtuoso action sequences to its romance, iCasino Royale/i is a Bond film that, in the words of one character, 'makes you feel it', particularly during an excruciating torture sequence. Double-0s, Bond observes early on, "have a short life expectancy". But with Craig, there is new life in the old franchise yet, as well as genuine anticipation for the next one when, at last, the signature James Bond theme kicks in following the best last line ever in any Bond film. To quote Goldie Hawn in iPrivate Benjamin/i, "now I know what I've been faking all these years". i--Donald Liebenson/i/p

Ultimate version of this Bond film October 25, 2008 KH (Kent, UK) 61 out of 62 found this review helpful
Rather than focussing on the film, which is well reviewed, here is a quick run-down of the extras on this "Deluxe Blu-Ray" version over the DVD Collector's Edition and original Blu-ray versions and the DVD Deluxe Edition.
br /
br /Firstly, those interested in the Blu-ray version over the DVD will be keen to know that all of the extras are in high definition, with the exception of the "Bond Girls" and "Chris Cornell music video" extras which are DVD resolution. Obviously there are some shots within the other extras that aren't full HD quality.
br /
br /Disc 1 extras:
br / - crew commentary
br / - picture-in-picture visual commentary (Blu-Ray only)
br / - James Bond quiz (Blu-Ray only)
br /
br /Disc 2 extras:
br / 1 deleted scenes (x4)
br / 2 Road to Casino Royale
br / 3 Ian Fleming's Incredible Creation
br / 4 James Bond in the Bahamas
br / 5 Ian Fleming: Secret Road to Paradise
br / 6 Death in Venice
br / 7 Becoming Bond Documentary (from original edition, HD)
br / 8 James Bond: For Real documentary (from original edition, HD)
br / 9 Bond Girls are Forever (from original edition, low definition)
br / 10 Art of the Freerun
br / 11 Catching A Plane storyboard to screen
br / 12 Freerun Chase storyboard sequence
br / 13 Filmmaker Profiles
br / 14 Chris Cornell music video (low definition)
br /
br /Of the new features, most fall into the category of interview-based documentaries with clips of the final film, although a few (items 6 and 10 in particular) are behind the scenes "how did they do it" material.
br /
br /I would recommend this version if you have the earlier DVD version but have since bought a Blu-ray player, as the Blu-Ray quality is excellent and there are some good new features. If you have the original Blu-ray version, only buy it if you really want the extra documentaries and like watching people sitting talking! If you haven't bought any previous version and have a Blu-Ray player then the extra cost over the DVD Deluxe Edition is certainly worthwhile.
Better than original version of Blu Ray November 13, 2008 R. A. Qureshi (London, UK) 13 out of 16 found this review helpful
Got it this week, I found it better than original version of Blu ray. Better colours, features...
br /
br /Some people like PCM of original version BUT it's sounds 99.9% same in DD TrueHD on my surround system (Denon 3808 AMP/MA Gold Speakers)
br /
br /I'll suggest if you are looking for Casino Royale in Blu Ray than go for this one rather than original one.
br /
br /I hope this will help you.
incredible film wached in the best possible way ! November 14, 2008 M. Selby (north east uk) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
the film itself is great but to watch it on blu ray was a totally different experince. the picture sharpness and colours are the most impressive iv seen with details throughout being stunning. the sound qquality when played through 5.1 surround just add to the experience making this the most watchable blu ray i own atm ! on top of this the box it comes in looks good and the extras on the seperate disk make this a must buy at this price!
This is the bigger picture 007 February 8, 2009 Mr. M. Randall (Sale, Cheshire United Kingdom) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
There's one word that describes this film and it's new presentation from Sony Pictures - Perfection.
br /This is one of the best Bond films made in-fact one of the best Action films made..... ever.
br /The original release was good - in terms of picture quality and sound but the presentation box and special features were, well poor. It has less to offer than the early DVD Bond releases from a few years ago.
br /
br /This comes beautifully packaged in a thick tipple fold double disc set with glossy brochure of the film in the middle. The box feels nicely made with tick textured card that is very sturdy. The discs contain hours of special features including BD Live. The documentaries on how Flemming came to write Casino Royale and how Broccoli Wilson came to make the film including the trouble of rights in the 50's 60's and they talk about why it was the right time now to make the first 007 adventure.
br /
br /My pick of the extras are 'The Road to Casino Royale' 'Ian Flemming's Incredible Creation'.
br /
br /For any Bond fan this is an absolute must have. Well presented and polished superbly to deliver an excellent 007 adventure in it's finest form.
Quality February 4, 2009 Mr. Fabricio F. T. Barros (UK) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
The best quality picture I have ever seen. Even if you do not like James Bond you should watch this film in Blu-Ray. Even other films do not show what this film shows.
br /THE BEST
