Editorial Reviews: Amazon.co.uk Review A more accessible and less heavy-handed movie than Ang Lee's 2003 iHulk/i, Louis Leterrier's iThe Incredible Hulk/i is a purely popcorn love affair with Marvel's raging, green superhero, as well as the old television series starring Bill Bixby as Dr. David Banner and Lou Ferrigno as the beast within him. Edward Norton takes up where Eric Bana left off in Lee's version, playing Bruce (that's the character's original name) Banner, a haunted scientist always on the move. Trying to eliminate the effects of a military experiment that turns him into the Hulk whenever his emotions get the better of him, Banner is hiding out in Brazil at the film's beginning. Working in a bottling plant and communicating via email with an unidentified professor who thinks he can help, Banner goes postal when General Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross and a small army turn up to grab him. Intent on developing whatever causes Banner's metamorphoses into a weapon, Ross brings along a quietly deranged soldier named Emil Blonsky (Tim Roth), who wants Ross to turn him into a supersoldier who can take on the Hulk. The adventure spreads to the U.S., where Banner hooks up with his old lover (and Ross' daughter), Betty (Liv Tyler), and where the Hulk takes on several armed assaults, including one in a pretty unusual location: a college campus. The film's action is impressive, though the computer-generated creature is disappointingly cartoonish, and a second monster turning up late in the movie looks even cheesier. Norton is largely wasted in the film--he's essentially a bridge between sequences where he disappears and the Hulk rampages around. As good an actor as he is, Norton doesn't have the charisma here to carry those scenes in which one waits impatiently for the real show to begin. --iTom Keogh/i

October 29, 2008 TK-1308 35 out of 38 found this review helpful When the first version of the Hulk hit the screens it met with a rather lukewarm reception but now Marvel have gone back to the drawing board and given us a new film which hits the mark one hundred percent. br /Set five years after Bruce Banner's accident with Gamma radiation, we find our hero living in South America, holding down a part time job and trying to learn how to control the beast that rages within him. br /Banner is in contact with the mysterious Mr Blue who is trying to help him find a cure for his problem but things get hectic when a military team succeed in tracking Banner down with the intention of examining him to find out how he got his abilities so they can replicate the treatment. br /Seeking help from Betty Ross, Banner returns to the USA to cure his condition once and for all, unaware that the military has taken further steps to bring both him, and the Hulk inside him, back home. br /Now this is exactly what the first Hulk film should've been. However, this one has been made by someone who obviously had a real passion for the original television series in the 70's as there are numerous nods to the show, right down to the opening title sequence and some of the music too. br /Norton is spot on as Banner and looks freakishly like Bill Bixby in some scenes. William Hurt is excellent, as always, as General `Thunderbolt' Ross, Liv Tyler is surprisingly good as Betty Ross and Tim Roth plays Banner's nemesis Emil Blonsky with zeal and gives us some great scenes. br /The film is well paced and builds to the satisfying conclusion as the Hulk and The Abomination fight it out while another classic Hulk villain is born in the debris of the battle. Readers of the comic book will spot him as soon as he appears on screen! There is a nice tie-in at the end with an appearance by Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark. br /For those who haven't seen it yet it's advisable for continuity purposes to watch Iron Man first, specifically the scene at the end of that film's credits, before this film and then the last scene will make perfect sense. br /The second disc contains some great extras including an alternative opening which comic book readers will understand the significance of, nearly 45 minutes of deleted and extended scenes, the ubiquitous making of and lots of behind the scenes info. br /As Marvel films go, this rates as one of their best and it's a must have piece of the puzzle that leads us towards the upcoming Avengers movie. Sure it was aweful, and made some of us sweat with sheer hatred at the boredom we suffered. When made aware of this film some simply sighed and said, "keep Ang Lee as far away as possible" he's a great director but isn't a comic book movie maker. This adaptation wasn't a sequel, nor was it a reinvention, it was simply a nudge in the right direction and had Louis Leterrier say this is how it should have been done. br / br /Ed Norton now takes the role as Bruce Banner and is supported by the sexually appealing Liv Tyler. Yes, I said sexually appealing. The film starts off in Brazil where Bruce is hiding from the United States army and keeping the Hulk at bay. He works in a bottling plant and one day cuts himself leaving a drop of blood in one of the bottles, which makes an un-witting Stan Lee very ill indeed. By the way, off topic a little but can Stan Lee please stop with the cameos. Yeah, we get it Stan, you came up with the characters it doesn't mean you have to appear in every single Marvel movie ever made. br /Back on topic. The Army track Bruce through the sick Stan Lee and employ Emil Blonsky, a man who's very high ranking in the British Royal Marines and is entrusted to bring Banner back to the states. Things don't go too well and the Hulk is awakened and destroys the soldiers, escaping once again. Blonsky isn't happy and with the help of General Thadeus Ross, he is put in the super soldier program for round two with the Hulk. br /Meanwhile, Banner wants a cure for the Hulk so he seeks out Betty Ross to help him cure himself along with the help of the mysterious Mr. Blue. br / br /I can't really go further into the story as it all comes together at the end in one excellent climax, but as you can see in the cover it involves Abomination in some way. In my review title I mention that this is a nod to everything Hulk and I wasn't kidding. Just the little things you tend to notice more if they're familiar to you. The nod to the TV show with Lou Ferrigno having a cameo and a nod to the games in the final scene, Hulk smashes a police car in two and uses the parts as make shift boxing gloves. Comparing it to the first movie, this has definitely taken more inspiration from the comics. Utilising comic villains and giving a possible hint to a villain in a future installment. The look and general feel of the film are very cartoon like but are still very cool. br / br /Hopefully this, along with Iron Man will lead to much more comic inspired comic book movies being made. Sure, you can give us a comic movie with the main hero, but it's not really a comic movie if you take that character and change the world around them. A very enjoyable movie and worth the time, especially for the end fight sequence between Abomination and Hulk. Incredible adaptation of the comic book! After the questionable success of the Hulk re-make, the film-makers were determined to do a good job this time and they sure did deliver! This movie is one of the finest comic-turned-film adaptations I have seen and this deserves every bit of praise it receives. The scriptt is engaging, it is fantstically shot and captured and lets not forget the incredible special effects! This is a film you do not want to miss - go out and see it as soon as you can. This is not to be missed by any comic book fans or superhero lovers. A well-earned 5 stars. Much better August 18, 2008 Lloyds Tsb (UK) 1 out of 9 found this review helpful i was a big fan of Hulk, though i did realise that the Hulk looked exceptionally fake and the storytelling was very boring (even by Ang Lee's Standards). I was happy and worried about this Hulk Re-boot. I was happy that it would be more action oriented, but i was worried that they may end up losing the story because of it. br /However, my worries were unfounded, as the movie was brilliant. Great characterization, Great Storytelling, Great action, and finally, The Hulk actually looked REAL this time (or as real as you could get a 10 foot monster to look). There was just the right mix of everything. They used the best storytelling devices from the TV show and combined that with the comic book. This, in the end created an immersive movie experience, which both comic and fans of The TV show could enjoy. I particularly enjoyed The second Transformation of the Hulk. If you remember the TV Show, it is reminiscent of how it happened there, but all in one shot. br /The Performances were great, especially Edward Norton, who looks somewhat like the late Bill Bixby (who has a cameo aswell. One of his early TV shows is shown at the beginning). Liv Tyler was a kinder Betty, and Tim Roth was cast against type, which in this case, worked nicely. The only complaint i have is General Ross. His motives are never entirely clear, and his performance is a bit uneven, but otherwise, the rest is good. br /On a final note, how about the Music. I can't remember the last time i was still humming a tune from a movie months after i had seen it. Quite astounding. Oscar nomination for that, at least. All in all, if you hated Hulk, give this film a chance. I just hope this film finds it's audience on DVD, so more sequels can be made. It certainly deserves success. A film for the fans! October 20, 2008 FussyMissus (Uk) 0 out of 7 found this review helpful I was not looking forward to this film, having enjoyed the TV show of years gone by and the previous Hulk film, wondering what they could do that was interesting or different. br /What they did was create a film that was clearly made for the FANS, and what a fantastic film it is. br /The Hulk origins are effectivley rewritten in the opening credits, and from there, the film follows its own course, a fast paced adventure with believable characters and some great CGI. We see more of the Hulk, more fight scenes, and for the fans, we are treated to glimpses of the old TV show in the form of a bit of that distinctive piano music we all came to love, the appearence of McGee, a cameo by Bill Bixby and a hysterical twist on the 'Don't make me Angry' line. It also acts as a set up for other Marvel productions, so watch carefully, and the ending is out of this world! br /Forget the previous film, according to this, and now me, it does not exist, THIS is the definitive Hulk film.
