Amazon.co.uk Review
A lean, briskly paced and exceptionally creepy thriller, iThe Strangers/i earns its scares the old-fashioned way: through atmosphere, sound design, and a simple yet undeniably upsetting central premise that allows for maximum tension throughout its running time. Attractive young lovers Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman are already having a bad day--she's turned down his marriage proposal--before a knock on the door in the middle of the night announces a full-fledged siege on their remote vacation home by a trio of masked assailants. The film's first third delivers the most consistent shivers as the visitors make their presence and intentions known to Tyler; the second half grows more frantic and bloody before a gruesome finale that may leave viewers either rattled to their core or bothered by its empty nihilism. Speedman is fine as the downtrodden male lead (who's seen tucking into a carton of ice cream after being rejected), but it's Tyler who impresses the most by shouldering the lion's share of the terror. First-time writer/director Bryan Bertino impresses by forsaking the current passion for over-the-top violence (save for the finale) in favour of more traditional means of generating fear, and if his project borrows heavily from other films, most notably the French chiller iThem/i (which shares its "inspired by a true story" origin) and Michael Haneke's iFunny Games/i, at least he's taking from the best. The sound design is among the many technical standouts, and the unsettling score by tomandandy (iThe Hills Have Eyes/i) pleasantly evokes Ennio Morricone's fuzztone-heavy work for Dario Argento in the early '70s. On a completely unrelated note, LP fanatics should appreciate how both the film's heroes and villains share an affinity for folk and country music on vinyl. --iPaul Gaita/i

5 out of 5 stars Nail biting!   December 9, 2008

I'm no film critic and i can't give any expert insite into the film but I enjoy scary films and i've seen my fair share of them. I've seen enough of them to find a lot of them unscary but this one really creeped me out. It's jumpy, nail biting, edge of your seat, gripping stuff! br /It may be different seeing it in the cinema but i really found it scary! br /I'm looking forward to buying it on DVD!

I cannot believe that people do not like this film! As i stated in a commment to Patroller this is no way a yawn fest. Fair enough it is maybe not to everyone's taste - not everyone is going to like a paticular film. However, some of the comments are unfair - i feel this had all the hallmarks of a great film - the one thing especially that made this good was the suspense/atmosphere. It is nice to see something that doesn't rely on tons of gore for a change! br / br /When i was in the cinema practically everyone was jumping out of their seats including myself and, although i am not comparing them film-wise, reminded me of something more akin to an Alfred Hitchcock in terms of atmosphere and suspense. Yes there is some blood and gore, but compared to most other horrors out nowadays which rely almost totally on this and virtually no storyline, it was a refreshing change. br / br /I am planning to buy this ASAP and add it to my collection! My advice is -at least give it a watch if nothing else and make your own mind up rather than being swayed by some of the comments on here.

5 out of 5 stars SERIOUSLY SCARY STUFF!   September 15, 2008

The strangers is based on true events that took place in America on Feb 11th 2005. It is about a couple that return late home in the countryside after a friend's wedding to discover that they are not alone. Three unknown attackers break in to cause havoc and the eerie events and torture that they undergo will shock viewers. br / br /The fact that the film is based on a true story makes it more creepy. The first opening credits with a statement that tells the viewer "every year 1.4billion violent crimes are reported in America" and that all the events that took place on that night are still unknown, makes for very uneasy watching. I would recommend anyone who watches this to be prepared for alot of jumpy scenes with creepy masks. br / br /The ending scenes are terrifyingly disturbing as the attackers stab the victims again and again to blood curdling screaming and that they remain unknown to the viewer. All you see is two females and a male man getting into a pick up truck and driving off with the statement "don't worry next time will be easier" This is indeed a film without a happy ending.

5 out of 5 stars Disturbing, psychological horror   November 19, 2008

The Strangers delivers a unique bland of terror whilst viewing. An unusually creepy sense of realism made me feel the fear as I watched Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman fighting for their lives through the night of horror while under seige by a trio of unknown psychos. The main characters give two deeply believable performances, making you feel the tension as you watch, nailed to the screen. The tension really is unbearable. The jumps make your heart beat a lot faster...!! I like the psychological side of the film: the fact that we dive deep into the minds of the characters and the way the gore factor is very low compared to other psycho thrillers. We see one mildly horrific shot of blood-use that is surely angering and painful to watch. br / I liked this film because it is unusual and different to other similar films of this same 'couple in distress whilst staying in a place that's not their actual home' type. A genuine spine-chiller.

this film is more frightening because it takes so long to build up, and theh whole thing just completely freaks you out.
