Amazon is the best that there is. I have never been let down. Ever. Please stay that way, Amazon!
The tragic life of Piaf November 18, 2009 Mr. Edward J. Merrikin (Cadiz, Spain) This movie portrays the tragic true life story of Edith Piaf, "the little sparrow". Hers was a hard and heart wrenching life, the sadness (and joy) of which has been perfectly captured in this film. The star who plays the part of Piaf, Marion Cotillard, was awarded an Oscar for her performance, and in my view it was one of the most merited Oscars ever to be awarded. Hers was a magnificent portrayal of the singer. The supporting actors also contribute in great measure to make this a wonderful entertaining experience. Piaf was born into abject poverty but the quality of her voice made her a worldwide star. Rags to riches in real life and a story that just had to be told. I loved it.
What a movie February 25, 2009 Paul A. Capaldi (West Midlands) 8 out of 10 found this review helpful
Well worth purchasing and a movie that I would watch over and over. Sad in parts but the music is uplifting as is the standard of acting.

I liked this film and especially the brilliant music of Edith Piaf. I found it a bit of a challenge to follow the story line, but that can be a good thing, wanting to watch it again. If this portrays an accurate picture of Piaf it is a valuable resource.
Did very little for me, I'm afraid November 21, 2009 Pedro el Malo I generally enjoy films with a musical biography theme and I like French cinema, so I had looked forward to watching this. However, I am afraid that it did very little for me. I watched the film in three or four sittings as I found it extremely dull, it did not grab my attention in any way and I had difficulty keeping focussed on it. To me Marion Cotillard's semi-hysterical melodrama was unconvincing as Piaf, as were the film's depiction of 'hard times' in Piaf's early years, which I found impossible to take seriously. The constant use of flashbacks to me also seemed pointless and made the film very disjointed and even less credible. Not one of the worst films I have ever watched, but far from being the really good film that its Academy and Bafta awards suggested it might be. Disappointing.
