4 out of 5 stars Savage Grace   February 5, 2009

Savage Grace. The Spanish financed Tom Kalin directed true story of Barbara Daly who married Brooks Baekeland (Stephan Dillane), hair to the Bakelite plastics fortune. Their only child (Eddie Redmayne) is a failure in his father's eyes, and as he grows up becomes increasingly close to his lonely mother (Julianne Moore) . Very George Bataille, very Ma Mere. Great sexually charged chemistry between the three leads. A very sensual movie beautifully filmed with an obvious European feel. My only criticism is that certain scenes should have been allowed to develop more.

4 out of 5 stars Slightly too Graceful?   November 23, 2008

I wouldn't fault this compelling movie in purely cinematic terms. I would have given it 5 stars were it not for the nagging suspicion that it might have somewhat stylised the dysfunctional traumas involved. But then, that's probably true of a lot of fact-based drama.

1 out of 5 stars Awful   February 10, 2009

After reading certain reviews, I was looking forward to seeing this film. How mistaken can you be! br /I have made two atempts with this review, trying to be constructive, but have failed, just like this film. br /It is ages since I have seen such a badly acted film and as for the direction production it is diabolical. So stagey with wooden performances. The dialogue did not flow and was developed as a series of seperate two minute acts, leaving you desperately trying to 'catch-up', whilst the film moved on to the next 'set'. br /I'm aware that the 15 rating this film received did warn you of the language content, however I'm far from being prudish, but the use of language in Julianne Moore's script was there only to try and shock you as a viewer and had no meaning within the direction of the film. br /I shall certainly be steering clear of buying/viewing anymore of Ms Moore's or Tom Kalin's work. br /As seen I have given this film a 1 star rating, that's only because this review would not let me give it nil.

1 out of 5 stars Horrendous FAKE American accents.!   June 23, 2009

I was expecting a good film. How incredibly disappointing.! br /Americans should be played by either Americans with real accents, or if they are British actors then their fake accents should be perfect. Through intense training with voice coaches. Any less these days is just not acceptable. It ruins the film. In the film besides Julianne Moore, the casting is atrociously BAD. The British actor who plays her husband, his fake American accent must be one of the worst I have ever heard.! It is horrendously BAD. Most of the time it^s English with the odd slant on the odd word. The son^s fake accent is dud too. Their acting is abymsmal, so wooden. What sort of crap Director would let this pass. br /The story/script too is very poor. To say it^s based on a true story it should of been a million times better. br /It starts off interesting in the late 1940^s. But within no time it^s in the 1960^s -1970^s and the story is so tedious and BORING. Infact it doesn^t get interesting again until the final 5 minutes. br /A music score is very important to a film. But not to this film. Instead of having a film score written for it. They just used music from "Howards End" movie. It was occassionaly slotted over the odd scene. And didn^t suit this film at all. br /To sum up the whole thing is a sham of a film. Incredibly poor everything throughout. br /Don^t waiste your money.!

Unable to comment on the film since we were unable to watch it without subtitles. If studios can not be bothered to provide subtitles at least make this clear on the product description br /
