3 out of 5 stars Not bad   October 20, 2008

The most obvious thing to say about this film is that the director, Andrew Lau, is,belatedly,in thrall to David Fincher's film Seven.Unfortunately, Mr Lau does not seem to possess anything like the talent of Fincher and so he takes an interesting tale and manages to make it less interesting. The first half hour seems like non-stop jump cuts, shaky camera work and arial shots of a car speeding along a desert road.Sound familiar?Thankfully it calms down a little after that, but curiously, despite,or most probably because of,the frenetic editing, the film drags and seems much longer than it actually is. br / br /This really is a shame, because Gere does some of his best work since Internal Affairs, unashamedly playing against his pretty boy image as a burnt-out sex offenders probation officer.Clare Danes is pretty good too, as are most of the cast, and the plot could have made for a really good, low-key thriller.Unfortunately, Lau's direction is shamelessly derivative,at times adolescently unpleasant, and frankly second rate. However,if you can sit through the first half hour, there is something worthwile struggling to get out here. There are some moments that are laughable, these are probation officers after all, so why don't they just call the cops etc.but overall it's not bad.Five stars for Gere's performance, four for Danes and minus one for Lau's dreadful direction.

I nearly turned the DVD off after 20mins. Carried on to the end. Not a film I would watch again
