| Customer Reviews: Sincere apologies from a young man June 2, 2009 Top Cat (Somewhere in England, apparently) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I hold my hand up and take the flack. For so long I have been under the impression that Dirty Dancing is just a cheesy film that encourages girls and women to guzzle down excessive amount of Rose', whilst sighing to a broody Patrick Swayze and becoming hedonistic over the classic soundtrack...
br /
br /... wait a second, it is good afterall! Though I personally find Jennifer Gray 'my type'.
br /
br /Something of a low-budget film from 1987, it's quite funny how what was almost an incinerated roll of film that would provide an alibi for an Insurance scam (due to the intense negativity post production!) turned out to not only become the best sold VHS in the world, but generate a double platinum soundtrack-album, and capture the imaginations of young people still to this day, 22 years on.
br /
br /It should also be remembered that Tom Cruise (yes, that little annoying guy) was up there flying planes around the same time too, whilst making motorbikes look cool because he didn't wear a helmet. So what do these films, or indeed the era have in common?
br /
br /Dirty Dancing builds a love story between the chemistry of 17 year old 'Baby' (Jennifer Grey), who has just met a working-class Dancer at a holiday camp called 'Danny' (Patrick Swayze). From the start, although many cliches exist, they are not blatant enough to become patronizing - in this films case, they are there to help represent the development of the 'teenager', and the differences of attitude between social classes.
br /
br /The use of imagery in this film is what I've found incredibly fascinating. Much of it is subliminal; you ask someone why they like Dirty Dancing, and they'll probably reply with "I can't explain it... It's just lovely". Thats because many of the shots are so cleverly tied in that they make the hair stand up. A combination of perfectly suited music and the realization of Baby's maturing makes this a quite heart-warming movie.
br /
br /The underlying theme of Baby's move from adolescence into adulthood is something that has rarely been matched, though other classic films have made good efforts (Uncle Buck, Ferris Buellers Day Off...). The final scene of the theme see's Baby hoisted up into the air in one careful dance move; an fantastic signifier for her 'ascendance' into a new world of being an adult.
br /
br /As said before, the music is some of the most memorable in Hollywood - their isn't a single song you would cast away from the playlist. "I've had the time of my life" is possibly one of the most feel good pieces of music of all time, ticking all the boxes for a timeless sound that followed not just the film set in 1963, but still now in 2009, sounding as fresh as ever.
br /
br /So there you have it - 20 year old male Uni student who still finds Tom and Jerry funny. If I can enjoy this, then what's stopping you?
br /
br /I only have one favour in return... Own up to it like me!

Amazing, simply amazing September 16, 2009 megamarble (South Yorks, UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Right about the time i was 17 Dirty dancing came out. I didn't watch it as i saw it as a girl only film. Later, a good few years later i watched it on VHS and thought it was amazing.
br /
br /I won't go into the story as that can be read elsewhere but i would comment on the wonderful soundtrack which really helps to make this a 'must see' film.
br /
br /And if, like me, you are of the male gender PLEASE don't dismiss this as a chick flick as you will be missing a wonderful film. I won't spoilt the ending, in case you don't know what happens, but it has a fantastic ending and all in all if a great feel good film. I actually envy anybody who has not seen it yet as i'd like to go and watch it 'fresh' and be impressed all over again.
br /
br /Do not miss it.
