Amazon.co.uk Review It's not really a knock to say that nothing in emTropic Thunder/em is funnier than its first five minutes, so sly that--especially for people watching in theaters--you don't realise right away they are the opening minutes of the movie. This outrageous comedy begins with a series of fake previews, each introducing one of the main characters in the film-proper (not that there's anything proper about this film) and each bearing the familiar logo of a different motion picture studio: Universal, DreamWorks SKG, et al. Such playing fast and loose with corporate talismans verges on sacrilege, but it's an index of how much le tout Tinseltown endorses the movie as a demented valentine to itself. The premise is that the cast of a would-be "Son of Rambo" movie shooting in some Southeast Asian jungle get into a real shooting war with drug-smuggling montagnards. Don't ask--though the movie does have an answer--why such highly paid, usually ultra-pampered personnel as superhero Tugg Speedman (Ben Stiller), Mozart of fart comedy Jeff Portnoy (Jack Black), hip-hop artist Alpa Chino (Brandon T. Jackson), and five-time Oscar-winner Kirk Lazarus from Aus-try-leeah (Robert Downey Jr.) should be running through the jungle unattended and very vulnerable. It matters only that the real-life cast has a high time kidding their own profession and flexing their comedic muscles. Bonus points go to Stiller for co-writing the script (with Justin Theroux) and directing, and to Downey, brilliant as a white actor surgically turned black actor for his role and utterly committed to staying in character no matter what ("I don't drop character till I done the DVD commentary"). Be warned: The movie, too, is committed--to being an equal-opportunity offender. Its political incorrectness extends not only to Lazarus's black-like-me posturing but also Speedman's recent, Sean Pennndash;style Oscar bid playing a cognitively challenged farmboy--or, in Lazarus's deathless phrase, "going the full retard." Others in the cast include Steve Coogan as a director out of his depth, Nick Nolte as the Viet-vet novelist whose book inspired the film-within-the-film, Matthew McConaughey as Speedman's sun-blissed agent back home, and Tom Cruise--bald, fat-suited, and profane--as an epically repulsive studio head. Two hours running time is a mite excessive, but otherwise, what's not to like? --emRichard T. Jameson/em

'I know who I am, I'm the dude playing the dude disguised as another dude!' October 5, 2008 M. J. M. Parker (England) 15 out of 22 found this review helpful
So after much hype, and many months of waiting, I finally got to see this in the cinema, and it's exactly what I thought it would be (Which makes a change), each actor (apart from Cruise) doing what they do best, Jack Black is loud and obnoxious, Stiller is is usual self and Downey is once again excellent.
br /
br /The film is based around a book written by an ex Vet that is now, led by Steve Coogan, being made into a film with, Stiller, Black and Downey as leads, who are a bunch of prima-donna actors who cause multiple delays throughout filming, causing Coogan to dump them in the real jungle with real bad guys and secretly film them to get the job done.
br /
br /The film itself becomes more a dig at the Hollywood lifestyle then a war/comedy and just how much the agencies will put money first over the actor.
br /
br /Now about my earlier Cruise comment... after watching this you can never take him seriously again, it's no where near his normal role and it's like they let him run riot with his character, now this is in no way a bad thing, actually the opposite, and the first half of the credits gets for me the biggest laugh, picture tom cruise with a receeding hairline, beer belly, foul mouth and panchent for RB dancing and you get the picture.
br /
br /In short, the actors do well, the laughs keep coming, it's full of celeb cameo's and it never strays from what it's meant to be, a piss take! More of this please Hollywood and less Scary Movie spoof crap!
Tropic Thunder January 25, 2009 eloquent (England Uk) 6 out of 13 found this review helpful
br /This film has a quirky dialogue to it, I will not go through the story, but what I will tell you is that its a film that can only grow on you the obvious gags are printed in bold but the other more subtle gags add to its dariness. Downy Jr produced well, Stiller Black, a very funny film a powerful idea if only the was worked on more in between it might have made a better impression on itself. This definitely still one to watch even just for Downey Jr and Stiller lol one of 2008's great films

I saw this at the cinema. I think there was about 20 people altogether, so I wasn't expecting much. But in all honesty THE funniest film I've seen in a long time. My favourite by far is Downey JR. I think everyone's given the credit to Stiller, but his character was nowhere near as funny as Downey JR. I can see how it can be seen as racist, but that's what makes it so funny, the way the real african-american reacts.
The funniest comedy since american pie 2. January 14, 2009 genejoke (uk) 3 out of 8 found this review helpful
I loved tropc thunder, the opening is hilarious but as with all comedies it the makers had to make a choice. Tell a story in which funny things happen or just go off the rails and go for laughs at the expense of story. As the latter course has resulted in movies like meet the spartans and epic movie I think the course taken waas VERY wise.
br / While few moments in the film match the opening, it has many moments of hilarity and keeps you chuckling throughout.
Surprisingly fantastic January 27, 2009 Nigel Collier (Newcastle upon Tyne) 3 out of 8 found this review helpful
My hopes weren't high for this movie before I watched it. From the reviews I'd read when it first came out, it sounded like it fell between two stools and never really quite hit its mark. What's more, from what I'd seen of them previously, I was really not a fan of either Jack Black or Tom Cruise.
br /
br /I have to say that I was really pleasantly surprised. I absolutely loved Tropic Thunder, and have watched it probably half a dozen times now. I've read many reviews which say that the highlights of the movie are over once the preceding spoof ads and trailers are finished. This is nonsense. The trailers *are* wonderfully made, but it's lazy to say that they make the rest of the movie pale by comparison.
br /
br /Tropic Thunder takes a novel plot and uses it to satirise the self-regarding excesses of Hollywood absolutely brilliantly and does so via a rich cast of characters portrayed sublimely. Downey Junior gets the plaudits and deservedly so for his portrayal of a pretentious, bad boy, method-acting parody of Russel Crowe, but personally I thought the two real standout performances were Jack Black and Tom Cruise.
br /
br /The more I watch the movie, the more I appreciate the complexity of Black's character - how finely it mixes slapstick and fart gags with an actor with issues - and the great skill Black displays in performing it. Tom Cruise's role may be one of the funniest and most refreshing cameos I've ever seen - it is so obvious when an actor is relishing a role and having fun. Ben Stiller's direction seemed accomplished, the script is very well written and absolutely dense with memorable lines. Very good entertainment in every department.
