Amazon.co.uk Review
Itrsquo;s always a danger to go back and offer a fresh take on a classic text thatrsquo;s already made the transition to television so well. In the case of iBrideshead Revisited/i, the 1981 miniseries has become so revered that itrsquo;s understandable few have been tempted to tackle it since. Enter, however, writers Andrew Davies and Jeremy Brock, who have taken Evelyn Waughrsquo;s novel, and created a television movie worth considering. p Set in 1925, the story of iBrideshead Revisited/i doesnrsquo;t easily fit into a feature running time, but the end result still works well. The life of the Marchmain family, under the ultra-critical eye of Lady Marchmain (played by the excellent, as always, Emma Thompson, in a quite small role) throws together romance, religion and a handy dose of obsession too, as outsider Charles Ryder gets invited to the Brideshead estate by Sebastian Flyte. Inevitably, the pace of the production is a little too quick at times, and following all of the characters takes some work. Yet this is a solid piece of period drama. p What it isnrsquo;t is a rival for the original miniseries, and perhaps thatrsquo;s why this take on iBrideshead Revisited/i went down the television movie route instead. The consequence is that it does feel a little cramped, and while the production values are good, a bit more breathing room in the running time wouldnrsquo;t have hurt. Still, as it stands this is a perfectly fine take on the novel, even if it never has pretensions to be the definitive one. --iJon Foster/i

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, poignant, moving   May 24, 2009

I'd like to add my penneth to what appears to be overwhelming condemnation of this movie. br / br /I am not familiar with the original series, and have not read the book, so I came to the movie with completely fresh eyes. I thought it was a beautifully shot piece of film-making, a cinematography lover's feast. br / br /I thought the principal actors, particularly Matthew Goode as the protagonist, and Emma Thompson, were extraordinary. Daylight robbery that Thompson was not nominated for her role, surely. And, really, Goode is perfectly cast as Ryder - the classic period looks, the perfect measure of restrained passion. It's all in the eyes with him. br / br /I have several favourite moments, but three come to mind and they are all towards the end: the first, when Ryder turns to the woman he has always passionately loved, defeated, and says, 'I hope your heart breaks', uttered so carefully, devastatingly, it almost made MY heart stop; the second, when Ryder reaches to pinch out the candle in the chapel - and stops, his fingers hovering about the flame, the symbolism of the moment so precisely encapsulated; and the final moment, with Ryder walking out into the blurred glare of sunlight, well, it's a thing of real beauty. br / br /This movie, it is not a flawless thing, but it is all the better for not being so, but it is gorgeous. I hope others love it too.

5 out of 5 stars The best film ever   July 30, 2009

I saw the trailers of Brideshead Revisited, and since that moment I have been waiting for the film to be released. Unfortunately, as I live in France, I wasn't able to watch it at the cinema. So, it was such a joy when I could buy it on Amazon.co.uk. The film is absolutely magnificent, and Ben Whishaw is just perfect. br /Plus I must say that Amazon provides clients with a very good value service.

5 out of 5 stars Refreshing Masterpiece   March 8, 2009

This version makes a very refreshing change to the dire boredom of the 80's when Iron's overplayed the male-male relationship angle - which somewhat fails to reflect the original text in my view. br / br /What we are left with is an interesting and wholly watchable epic that is not camp or overplayed. It is sensitive and respectful and simply outshines the overpriced, overblown and over rated 80's version - which is all it was. br / br /This is Brideshead Revisited as it should be. Concise and apt, Crisp and in context. If you found the 80's version to be a fetish based bore this will delight you.

5 out of 5 stars Rather good, actually.....   August 9, 2009

Brideshead Revisited comes as a novel, a drama series and - recently- a feature length film. Each very good, in their own right. The latest was indeed stripped bare of anything fit to read between lines. What left was a love story, told in the most beautiful way possible. The developement of Charles' and Sebastian's relationship and its subsequent decline after Julie had turned it into a love triangle, was sensitively portrayed. At intervals religious and moral issues were raised but were not deeply explored. I don't hold this against this picture as a choice had clearly been made by the producer to produce a love story 'based on the novel by Evelyn Waugh'. It never claimed to be an exact adaptation. Superb acting by all the cast, with Matthew Goode and Emma Thompson in particular. Great musical score and breathtaking views of British countryside and Venice made it all the more worth watching.

5 out of 5 stars Brideshead Revisited   November 19, 2009

I loved this film. I was worried that I would be constantly comparing it with the television version, and had read the book so long ago that I had forgotten the finer points of the story. Worries were allayed. The conflicts between religion and relationships were made really clear in this version. Visually stunning.
