5 out of 5 stars Outstanding   December 31, 2008

Watched this without knowing anything about it. As a huge fan of the horror genre, I am used to disappointment and lacklustre offerings. br /This is an outrageously good horror film; it centres around a 'family' who kidnap and torture a young Polish imigrant. Whereas there are elements of graphic violence, there is so much more to this film that is unsaid and understated, making it an absolute masterpiece. A film of ideas which places horror back in the everyday and the common place, a context which is so much more satisfying than glossy high budget remakes. br /If you have even a passing interest in horror, or have the stomach to take such material, this is a beautiful crafted and sensitively made film that trawls the darkest of places. It's brilliant to see British horror back on the map. A must see.

5 out of 5 stars Genuinely disturbing...   January 3, 2009

I bought this DVD not knowing a great deal about it, but based on other Amazon reviews it looked like my kind of film. It far exceeded my expectations and I can honestly say that, as well as being the most disturbing thing I've seen in years, it's also one of the best horror films I've ever seen. Rather than simply re-hash the recent torture porn genre, it takes the same basic premise and gives it a suburban twist to produce some really startling scenes. I won't give anything away, but don't watch it with a full stomach!

It is the sickest movie I have seen in a while, but in a good way! br /Perfect portrait of a more than dysfunctionnal family. The actors play the part very well and the idea is pretty original.I recommend it to all horror fans.

5 out of 5 stars So Refreshingly British!   March 28, 2009

This movie was a complete surprise. Well filmed and acted. No boring A-list celebs or Hollywood soundtrack. And it does exactly what this genre should do... horrifies. br / br /How people can put tired Hostel and SAW movies above this completely mistifies me. This is in a league all of it's own. Just don't make it a date movie!

5 out of 5 stars de profundis   January 16, 2009

This is a great film. It plunges to the darkest depths of human depravity. I think it may have been loosely based on the West murders with the capturing of immigrants, the torture chamber, extremely dysfuntional family. Hellish acts are served up with a Mcvities digestive. Your average serial killers blend into the mundanity of everyday life. Perry Benson is amazing as Dad so are the other actors that add to this film. Extremely disturbing but totally compelling at the same time. The meat scene is the most gut churning thing you'll see.
