April 24, 2009 pointone (Bournemouth UK) 9 out of 9 found this review helpful Immortal Beloved [DVD] [1994] br / br /When Beethoven (Gary Oldman) died his friend Anton Schindler Jeroen Krabbe) discovered four letters addressed to the "Immortal Beloved" and as we followed Schindlers efforts to trace the unknown woman (no one has ever discovered for certain who she was) but considered to be one of the four women portrayed in the film. br / br /This is not a biopic but a very successful effort to use selective flashbacks to evoke the rebellious and turbulent nature of this unhappy creative genius, including his obsessive behaviour towards his nephew Karl (Marco Hofscheinder). br / br /The portrayal of the composer confronted with total deafness is searing, particularly the scene where he tries to hear a piano by laying his head on the lid, and later having to be turned around during the first performance of his Choral Symphony to acknowledge the applause. br / br /Am absolute gem. br / Poetic! If you are a fan of Gary Oldman, you cannot miss his performance in this film. If you are intrigued by the history of the time, do watch it. It's a beautiful film Magnificent! August 26, 2009 Kona (Emerald City) The year is 1827, and famed composer Ludwig van Beethoven has just died. He leaves his estate to someone only known as his "Immortal Beloved," so his secretary goes about finding out who she may be among his many lovers. br / br /This movie is absolutely beautiful. Beethoven's music, of course, is the soundtrack and also the main plot point, as the writer/director speculates on the events in the maestro's life that inspired each piece. The movie goes back and forth in time to each of the important people in Beethoven's life and we see his music evolve from much tragedy, some euphoria, and most of all, his passion for life. There is even a persuasive scene accounting for his deafness. br / br /With lavish costumes and picturesque Czech locations, it's lovely to look at but even more impressive is Gary Oldman's portrayal of Beethoven. Though playing a conceited, temperamental, and often angry man, Oldman still wins our sympathy and he is at his charismatic best. If you love Beethoven's music and/or period films, you'll enjoy this exciting biopic. Highly recommended. This is a must see movie. August 27, 2009 Dennis D. Greer (Ireland) Immortal Beloved [DVD] [1994] br / br /This is an amazing movie,Gary Oldman plays in one of his greatest roles ever. Issabella Rosalini is fantastic as the countess. But the greatest thing in this movie is beethovens music and his turbulant live, and how the public not knowing about his deafness mistook him as being rude, This is a must see and get the tissues out at the end.
