| Customer Reviews: A good German film, some quibbles April 24, 2009 Charles Voogd (Underwaterland) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I rented this DVD at the local library because Tom Cruise's Valkyrie wasn't available yet.
br /I think it's a good movie, well done by European standards.
br /Pros:
br /It's in German which is for me, as a Dutchman born after 1945, almost a second language. I heard Tom Cruise's film was in English throughout... bah!
br /Smoking was allowed in Germany around this time so everyone smokes and the whole set is covered with cigarette smoke.
br /It's solidly acted, apart from some wooden performances.
br /It gives a good account of the way things went wrong.
br /It's not a big budget film so there're no enormous explosions, sets etc. it's more or less intimate.
br /Germans can still play Nazis very very convincing.
br /
br /Cons:
br /Although everyone can read about the story I didn't beforehand and the whole thing confused me a little. (At school I learned most of the first German Kaiser not WWII I think). Not one moment is explained what Operation Valkyrie in fact was.
br /There're many people involved with many small roles so it takes some time to get to know everybody.
br /The panic and confusion after the assassination and the way von Stauffenberg tries to get control of things is underplayed. Not very convincing. I've seen Sebastian Koch in das Leben der Anderen too (The Lives of Others) in which movie I found him more convincing.

Chronicle of Stauffenberg's plot mainly through re-enactments CG reconstructions June 14, 2009 DF McCleland (Johannesburg, South Africa) Most people with some knowledge of WW2 are aware of the plot to kill Hitler. This DVD will fill in the detail. Obviously there would never be extant footage of the of the dramatic events being the final 15 minutes when the bomb was placed in the conference room. All of these events are re-enacted or reconstructed using CG.
br /
br /Even though there are interviews with relatives one co-conspirator, most dramatis personae were either executed in the aftermath of the events of 20th July 1944 or they have subsequently passed on.
br /
br /Even though the subtitle explicitly states that the DVD relates to Stauffenberg's Plot, the DVD does actual cover the two other known plots viz the bomb in Munich in 1938 the bomb of the plane in Russia in 1942 both of which were failures.
br /
br /The DVD is well made cannot be faulted per se. The rating of 4 instead reflects the reviewer's disappointment with the lack of "heft" or substance. As such it will not be a DVD that will be re-watched too often.
