5 out of 5 stars A very good classic western   January 24, 2009

Saw this a week ago, and i was not expecting too much going in, but i was br /very impressed by this western, it had a classic feel to it, which is great as some westerns are too action biased, and have little story or feel to them. br /Very pleasantly surprised, if you like westerns, you have to see this. br /(and i agree it really deserves more than a one star review) br / br /

5 out of 5 stars IMPRESSED !!   January 26, 2009

I did watch it 2 days ago and I was impressed thrilled over this western. They still know (Ed Harris-the director) how to make it. Cast is great, director playing the main role (Ed Harris), then Mr. Aragorn from the LOTR - WOW= Viggo Mortensen again showed that is just better and better in every role. Hats off again Viggo!! Also like Jeremy Irons and Renee too. I enjoyed in '3 some' conversation-not much words, but looking and observing Viggo's face was the best performance for me! br /(One star review - agreed with the others - pls.just skip itdon't read it !)

5 out of 5 stars Appaloosa   February 18, 2009

It is true what they say. The Western is becoming less and less common and less and less appealing. In recent years you have had ups and downs in the genre. The Assassination of Jesse James and Appaloosa have been great films and then you get 3:10 to Yuma, and The Missing which have left a lot to be desired. br / br /Appaloosa is set in 19th Century America/Mexico border and the town, (which is called Appaloosa) is home to the villanous Randall Bragg (Jeremy Irons) and his gang of thugs. So statesman Phil Olson (Timothy Spall) hires city marshall, Virgil Cole (Ed Harris) and his deputy Everett Hitch (Viggo Mortenson) to clean up the streets and bring the town back to the right side of the law. But a woman named Allison French (Renee Zellweger) arrives in town, she is nothing but a spanner in the works because Cole falls in love with her and from there on in, things get a bit more complicated. Especially when Gun-For-Hire Ring Shelton realises he can use Mrs. French to get what he wants. br / br /The film is directed, co-written and produced by Ed Harris who also, somehow finds the time to play the lead role. Much like The Assassination of Jesse James, this Western is a character driven film, that lacks (although is better because of it) in the non-stop action of films such as 3:10 to Yuma. br / Cole and Hitch have a respect for each other and at points during the film they communicate without speaking, knowing what they mean by their facial expressions (Mr Mortenson being especially good at this). Harris and Mortenson have worked together before in A History of Violence and it seems that they have the respect and friendship that their characters have because of this. br / br /Lance Henrikson and Timothy Spall carry out their small parts well. Henrikson is the Gun-For-Hire who Bragg hires to bust him out of jail and Spall is the statesman who hires the marshall to lock Bragg up. They do not have big parts but carry them out well and help the story along. br /Renee Zellweger plays the lady of the story. She has been criticised for being weak but that is only because she is next to some five star acting by Harris, Mortenson and Irons. She holds her own agaisnt the men of the film and her performance might not win any awards but it is by no means poor. br / br /This is probably the best Western since Clint Eastwoods stormer Unforgiven and is defiantely worth watching. It has been a spark of life in a dying genre and Harris has created a wonderful film that can be watched a number of times. A brilliant film! Please watch it.

5 out of 5 stars A Modern Western Nugget.   February 22, 2009

Hats off to Ed Harris. This is a great movie from the multi-tasking star it's well acted, directed, written and contains all the hallmarks of what you expect from a modern western. br / br /The attention to detail in this piece is amazing and is also reflected in the choice of actors Ed has assembled. Viggo Mortensen, Renee Zellweger, Jeremy Irons and Lance Henrikson fill the screen with their brand of understated techniques and minimalist qualities. It keeps the film real and personal. All this coupled with the extremely well written script makes this a must see. br / br /If you're a fan of any of the actors or a western fan generally then you'll enjoy this. More importantly -don't pay no mind to those one star reviewers -they belong in a one horse town, with no way out except 6 feet down. This ain't up there with the greatest westerns of all time but by modern standards (post Unforgiven) it gets 5 stars and is thoroughly enjojable. Adios.

5 out of 5 stars Buddies not afraid to die   June 10, 2009

This is a superb western, though I think it would appeal to those not normally attracted to the genre, too. The visceral trust between the two main characters (brilliantly portrayed by Harris and Mortensen) lies at the heart of the film, and it's a bond expressed in laconic dialogue. Here are two men, two spartan gunmen, who never say more than needs to be said - it's almost ironic how well that works in a film, given the medium's ongoing demand for someone to say something, anything! br /Appaloosa also takes us back to a time and circumstance where, maybe, men had to consider the possibility of dying just a little bit more than most of us do now. Not being afraid to die is one of the hardest things a man or woman can achieve. Virgil Cole and Everett Hitch show us how. But not in a gloomy way! For the film has moments of humour, too, including the engaging idea that professional gunman Virgil Cole is obsessed with learning new words. br /Among other actor-characters, I'd no problems with Jeremy Irons and his hybrid accent (surely would have been a lot of these in a young country, anyway), nor with Renee Zellweger who, like Irons, brought something special and unstereotypical to the film. br /I've already said too much (!), but would add that Appaloosa stuck around my head for a long time afterwards - always the sign of a good movie (disturbing horror excepted) - and persuaded me to read Robert B Parker's excellent novel, upon which it is based. So, I've also discovered a great author, who was new to me. All in all, quite a ingivorating cultural experience. Ingivorating, that the word, Hitch? Invigorating, Virgil. Invigorating, right.
