Suspense, great effects. May 20, 2009

Started like a typical alien movie but suspense as to how Keanu character would evolve. The effects were brilliant, the 'swarm' absorbing everything in its path gave you the shivers. The characters were 'typical' authority figures making the decisions you knew would not work. The lead characters held the movie until the end. Brilliant.

This is a very exciting updated version of the old 1951 film, The Day The Earth Stood Still, originally starring Michael Rennie and Patricia Neal. br /In this 2008 re-make, the alien Klaatu is played by Keanu Reeves and the girl is played by Jennifer Connelly. br /In this more modern version they have gone for some amazing Special Effects, which make the story very exciting. Jennifer Connelly and her young stepson find themselves the World's only hope to prevent the Earth from being annihilated. br /It is a very good modern film, though in some ways it has lost some of the atmosphere of the original, but it is certainly an exciting watch on a rainy Sunday afternoon.

I really don't understand the detractors giving this film 1 or 2 stars. The original was a classic and this is a slick, sensitive and well crafted update. It's exciting, has great acting and, like the original, entertains while putting over an important message. I wish there WAS a Klaatu to shake us to our senses. Anyway, aside from all the eco-sobbing, it's just a good film. br / br /Watch it and decide for yourself!

Despite the reviews in the various papers, I decided to purchase this film as I liked the original. Quite frankly my tastes obviously don't tally with various critics as I thought this film was very well done and the effects were brilliant.
