Amazon.co.uk Review To some, iLars and the Real Girl/i will play as comedy; to others, tragedy. Though Craig Gillespie (iMr. Woodcock/i) allows Lars Lindstrom (a mustachioed Ryan Gosling, miles away from iHalf Nelson/i) a happy ending, the road is far from smooth. This rumpled Midwesterner couldn't be more miserable. His brother, Gus (Paul Schneider, iAll the Real Girls/i), and sister-in-law, Karin (Emily Mortimer, iLovely and Amazing/i), fall over themselves to cheer him up, but Lars cannot be moved; hersquo;s been like that since childhood. Then a porn-addicted co-worker hips him to the lifelike Real Doll. The next thing everyone knows, Lars has a new girlfriend named Bianca. She's from Brazil, she's shy, and she uses a wheelchair. She's also made of silicon. (Because Lars is a devout Christian, hanky-panky is out of the question.) Since he's finally emerging from his shell, his doctor, Dagmar (Patricia Clarkson), advises Gus and Karin to play along with the "delusion." Soon the whole town, including Margo (Kelli Garner), who harbors a not-so-secret crush on her officemate, gets in on the action, forcing Lars to rejoin the human race or crawl deeper into psychosis. p/pWritten by iSix Feet Under/i's Nancy Oliver, iLars and the Real Girl/i is built around such a preposterous premise, it's hard to know whether to laugh or cry. Fortunately, the actors play it straight. Gosling does his best to make Lars sympathetic, but Schneider and Mortimer, fully convincing in their concern, are the true heart and soul of this odd little film. --iKathleen C. A surprising gem January 8, 2009 RR (London, UK) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
Despite having such a curious yet seemingly unpromising premise, this film is a delight. I haven't watched a film that has made me laugh and cry so much in a long time. Despite involving a sex doll, there is nothing sleazy about the plot or the characters. It's a gentle and moving film with some great performances.
Superb plot, awesome acting; a real treat. January 28, 2009 Fiona (Campbeltown, Scotland) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This film is magical, during the week it was on at my local cinema I paid to see it 3 times. It is an unconventional love story that can simultaneously break your heart and makes you laugh out loud every time you watch it. If you haven't seen it, watch it and if you are considering buying it, do...it is a great investment!! No matter what mood I am in, watching Ryan Gosling as a geeky (almost) recluse, with a big heart is entertaining every time.
Lars in Love March 8, 2009 Ms. E. Britton 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Lars and the Real Girl is one of the most beautiful love stories of the year. It's really something of a side note that one of the lovers happens to be made out of silicone. Morose Midwesterner Lars Lindstrom (Ryan Gosling sporting a curiously endearing moustache) is far from happy; he has been withdrawn and sullen since childhood after tragedy befell his mother and he has spent his entire adult life avoiding friendship and human contact. But even Lars isn't immune to the pull of love. One afternoon a porn loving co-worker of Lars introduces him to the concept of the Real Doll and a couple of days later Lars is knocking on his brother's door asking if his new girlfriend Bianca can stay at his house while she's in town for a visit. Being committed Christians, Lars and Bianca couldn't countenance staying in the same house without a chaperone being present. Having obviously worried for years about the mental state of his introverted brother, Gus and his wife Karin (Paul Schneider and Emily Mortimer at their heart-warmingly incredulous best) are thrilled that Lars finally has a girlfriend and pleased for her to stay with them. Imagine their surprise when Lars introduces them to the wheelchair bound, incredibly lifelike and anatomically correct mannequin that is Bianca. Worried about tipping Lars further over the edge into madness, Gus and Karin along with the rest of their small town decide to treat Bianca as they would any other person and soon welcome her into their community. Having no choice but to socialise for Bianca's sake, Lars is forced to rejoin the human race and even ends up in a love triangle with pretty co-worker Margo. Lars and the Real Girl is based on an utterly ridiculous premise but it just works wonderfully as a film. Ryan Gosling is bumbling, awkward and charming and somehow makes Lars an utterly believable character. The story is delightful and profound yet still manages laugh out loud moments. Lars and the Real Girl isn't exactly a mass appeal kind of film but it really should be since, after all, love often is found in the strangest of places.
superb...... February 10, 2009 cheekywench84 (uk) This was an utter shock when I watched this film, I thought by looking at the cover and reading the plot 'oh boy' and braced myself for a bit of obscure cinema but I am extremely happy to report as soon as I had watched a mear few minutes I was very plesantly shocked. I have seen 2/3 times now and loved every time it is a superb film, the cast is excellent, Ryal Gosling is fantastic and such a promising future I cannot wait to see more of him in future. I loved how subtle the film was, it was very touching, heart warming, moving and funny!! Everything you could ask for from a feel good non schmaltzy film, I am over the moon I can buy now I waited for ages well worth it. For me this is the feel good indie film hit of 2008.
Lars and the Real Girl February 18, 2009 Mr. S. Brennan I found this film thoroughly entertaining. Ryan Gosling performance was nothing short of brilliant. This film is a rare gem. I strongly recommend everyone to watch this film.
