intelligent horror with none of the shocks spared... April 14, 2009 Laura (North West) 8 out of 10 found this review helpful
Finally, a film to prove that the elusive beast of intelligent horror writing/filmmaking is not dead! I expected good things of a Clive Barker adaptation, and even greater things of a Clive Barker adaptation actually endorsed by Barker himself - and I wasn't disappointed. I can't fathom why this film received the panning it did by film critics and viewers alike, but I'll try my best to explain both these views and also why this film had such an impact on me.
br /
br /The claim that this film hinges on a weak storyline meshed together with gratuitous violence (the worst they've ever seen, some people have claimed) is objectively false. This is no more explicitly violent than the deluge of torture porn franchises that the horror film genre is currently drowning in. So, why the big deal? I personally believe that the violence in MMT is of an entirely different ilk to the previously mentioned torture porn flicks: you're not going to find the ridiculously contrived puzzles of Jigsaw here; nor will you find the cheap vicarious thrills apparently provided by seeing young photogenic adults killed in ever more ingenious and disgusting ways. No, the violence in MMT is brutal, practical (utilitarian almost), and most importantly there is no escape from it; there are no thrills here, just the bleak inevitability of destiny.
br /
br /That's why this film is amazing. That's what Barker is about. There is nothing objectively good or bad and nothing is objectively safe or unsafe - but everything serves a purpose. He reminds us that underneath the glossy exterior of our world and underneath everything that we believe in, there are other things just on the edge of the imagination that we constantly try to run from. This film shows those things in a grimy, uncompromising and unforgiving way.
br /
br /This film is for true horror fans - people who do not want to turn the film off at the end, forget and return to their happy little existence, people who want to think about what they've just seen a little deeper and most importantly, people who don't mind feeling just that little bit less safe after seeing a film than they did before.

A pleasant surprise April 8, 2009 Thing (UK) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I must say that at first I was dubious, Vinnie Jones et al, but I was pleasantly suprised to find it a refreshing change to the mainstream hack slash genre. Mr Jones portrayal of the the lead villain as a quie, menancing, and intimidating, but in some ways sad, individual, was excellent. SFX were amazing but at times the graphic violence was a little too relastic. Some scenes had me looking away from the screen....

Get on it...........................Now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! February 22, 2009 Mr. K. J. Bailey (England) 5 out of 8 found this review helpful
Pandoras box is a true story of the saying curiosity killed the cat.
br /truth is, some things are better left unknown.
br /Clive Barker brings this message across amazingly with the help of a director who's name i cannot spell from the book to the screen as the Midnight Meat Train.
br /The film was entertaining from start to finish great story, good filming good acting with a whole lot of blood and carnage to keep you mesmerised.
br /Bradley Cooper plays a photograper who is encouraged by brooke shields to delve deeper into his passion which he does with disturbing results along with leslie bibb and vinnie jones who deserves an award for his transition from football player to hollywood bad boy to underground subway monster.
br /Though silent and deadly throughout the movie, I felt very sorry for his character he portrayed him as violent bloody and mysterious i can see why bradley coopers character was so obsessed with him no indication is given as to how vinnie became what he is in this film but i would honestly love to know. The deeper bradley goes after vinnie, The deeper he's affected by what he see's and also his poor girlfriend and best mate end up to on the menu of the macabre as well.
br /All in all we have here a well crafed story directed brilliantly with really good actors. The setting of the film adds to the normality of everyday life the almost gray looking shots work very well and everyone in this film kinda just looks like everyday people you pass in your own life on the streets leaving you with the feeling that this can easily happen to you.
br /Buy this movie you will not regret it. It delivers all the way.

br /The train driver and the police detective were also very good.
