3 out of 5 stars Enjoyable cyberpunk flick   July 15, 2009

OK, this film is far from perfect, but it is still a fun popcorn movie that all cyberpunk fans should see at least once. Bai Ling is hot as a futuristic assassin. The music is great and the FX are impressive considering the low budget.

3 out of 5 stars Another Blade Runner wannabe   February 28, 2009
PJ Rankine (Wallington, Surrey United Kingdom)
Okay let me expand on that headline. Yet another director's view of the future is taken straight from Blade Runner, the perpetual gloom and rain, the run down buildings and punk inhabitants and even the Chinese imagery with flying junks overhead. Into that they have thrown a weak story line about gene technology and its one saving grace, Bai Ling. She strides the film like an escapee from Akira with her breasts pushed into an unrealistic cleavage and futuristic weapons killing everything in her way. The film really rates two and half stars but is just about watchable if martial arts and poor sci-fi is your bag.

2 out of 5 stars what could have been.....   August 5, 2009

in the not too distant post apocalyptic future mankind is in trouble (is there any kind of sci-fi where mankind isnt!) it is crumbling and people are struggling to stay safe in the city, the only safe place is the walls of the city but you need a certain quality of DNA to be allowed access, cue people "hacking" DNA,this leads to our hero who is a hired asassin who deals with these DNA hackers br /theres also some stuff about a DNA altering glove that caused all the problems and her gambling addict brother which moves the plot along br /there isnt anything here that you havent seen done elsewhere, and done alot better, the FX are ok,the acting is pretty poor and the pacing is really slow br /on the plus side it looks good, the city where its set is fantastically realised and the costumes are fantastic if acknowledged very obviously steam/cyberpunk influenced br /the soundtrack disappointingly is easily the best thing about it,when the haunting epic string and choral sections calm down they hit us with some thumping EBM br /overall if you want an undemanding watch then you wont be disappointed but if you are expecting an all out action sci-fi megathon then look elsewhere as almost all the fighting and explosions are in the trailer and the rest of the film is a badly acted predictable plodding dull slab of bland unimaginative sci-fi
