5 out of 5 stars Fantastic addition to the fantasy genre!   February 6, 2009

I saw this at the cinema, and I couldn't take my eyes off the screen during the whole feature. br / br /Of course it not EXACTLY like the book. It has taken parts out, switched things around, but all book-to-movie adaptations do that. br / br /It is purely incredible to watch, the characters are perfect, and the special effects are brilliant. br / br /As a huge fan of the Inkworld trilogy, I am definately NOT dissapointed with this film. And am now waiting impatiently for the DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Better than the book   March 31, 2009

I love Cornelia Funke's books but when I read Inkheart I was disappointed. The storyline wasn't too convincing (for instance: why does no one ever call the police? Seriously!) and Capricorn was too dark and evil a villain for a children's book. I only went to see the movie because of the cast and was positivly surprised! It has a more fantastic aspect, there a lots of creatures in that little village straight out of fairytales, for instance. And there you have a convincing and very easy explanation why you can't call the police, they can't find unicorns and flying monkeys! Rule number one: Muggles can't know about that other world. br /Careful, spoilers following: br /Aunt Eleanor goes back and helps her family out because she decides she can't leave in the middle of her story. She has to finish what they started because it's the right thing to do and not, like in the book, because she wants revenge for her burned books, a way cheaper motive. Dustfinger is not a weak traitor who wants what's best for him, he was written that way and throughout the entire movie fights his character. He wants to be the good guy but is just scared. That makes him so much greater and more interesting because of his constant internal struggle and him coming through in the end. And Capricorn is not a coldblooded murderer anymore with a masterplan to rule the world. He's is this nasty little guy (Andy Serkins just isn't scary as hell but rather mad and dellusional). He thinks he can rule the world but even his men aren't terrified of him. Maggie's mother is also a strong character always trying to find a way out and in the end she even gets her voice back. And Dustfinger has a more romantic motive to get back into the book. He can deal with our world alright but his love is still in "Inkheart" and of course he has to get back. br /All in all everything that I disliked about the book was changed for the better in the movie, usually it's the other way around. So I can only highly recommend it. The only thing that didn't really make sense is that Dustfinger doesn't return home when Maggie reads everybody who wants to back in there books. But Mo had to fulfill his promise, so...

This is a wonderful family film. Peter Serkis is horribly great in it and plenty of other well known actors are used to their best. Super story, wonderful cgi effects. What can I say - brilliant and a classic!
