5 out of 5 stars Not the Video Game   January 20, 2009

Let us note that this film (obviously) isn't the video game. It's a film based on the video game. Slight difference. For one, this is a plot-driven film rather than a mindless action flick/shoot 'em up. br / br /Max Payne (Mark Wahlberg) is a cop tortured by the death of his wife and child, and he is hell-bent on finding who did it. He starts from the bottom and works his way up the hierarchy, uncovering military secrets along the way, which just lead him to climb higher. The film opens with Max Payne falling in icy waters with a film noir-esque monologue. It's a shame this monologue is so short and one of the few narrations, but it's enough to make the viewer wonder why he's there. From there it goes back in time and develops it's way back to that point. Along the way he meets Natasha Sax (Olga Kurylenko) and her sister Mona Sax (Mila Kunis). Unfortunately, I don't feel either of them, particularly Mona Sax got enough development or screen time. br / br /The visuals are very good and certainly quite creepy. The finale is certainly a high point in cinema special effects, and the cinematography is expertly done with some scenes as photographic and artistic as those in Road to Perdition. There's also a good soundtrack that helps the viewer to emphasise and feel the emotions Max feels. This ranks amongst my top films and I will be soon to pre-order my copy, no matter what the price.

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie   May 30, 2009
Mr. Conrad Steven Malpas (South Wales)
This was a movie that was crying out to be made. The games that this movie was based on were dying to become movies with the great action sequences and great story of revenge. br / br /Mark Wahlberg was also the perfect choice to play Max and hopefully that they will make a movie sequel quite soon.

4 out of 5 stars Feel the Max   April 18, 2009

Many persons have complained about this being below par in comparison with the game. Film adaptations of PC games have at best been 'unfortunate'. I watched this steeling myself the same way I started watching "Resident Evil" [I like those movies by the way as I take the pinch of salt each time I press play] or "Doom" [or DIRE as I prefer to call it]. I am a great fan of the MAX PAYNE PC Games so bought this on the back of it. However, lets be honest, Max Payne the PC game's strength was it was a collection of hackneyed cliches of film noir. This film is just like the game in that respect with no disrespect. As a 'spin off'. I was pleasantly surprised. The film catches the nuances of the palette of the game. If you don't understand that last sentence then don't buy this film. If you liked the narrative graphic novella of the PC game, the noir feel, you'll enjoy this supplemental cinema version. Wahlberg was good in the lead though I did miss Vlad: "Max, dearest of all my friends!"

4 out of 5 stars I'm no geek and this film is full of style...not bad.   May 14, 2009

NOTE...spoiler alert... br /Yes i played max payne on my ps2 and it was the first game to do the john woo double gun takedown in slowmo. I remember the style of the game...moody...dark and in places disturbing. This film is actually quite stylish. What gets alot of idiots and probably the ones that have reviewed this dvd negativly is that the drug which is the main evil in this film either converts you to a super blood thirsty maniac or gives you hallucinations that norse gods of war ie the valkyrie are trying to kill you. Talk about an overdose or what!!!!. Now just reading that last bit should be enough for you to buy it....rent it...or go back to it and try to understand it as some of you obviously have not. The action isn,t bad either....the swat style cop shoot out and max taking on the ragnarock club with his shottie are pretty cool. There is a bit of slowmo to ease my supposed geeky browe. I hope they do a sequel as much like the games the film leaves the plot open. Playing the games doesn't ruin the film. So I say to you...bring on the pain...

Thought the movie was not going to live up to the games but was nicely surprised. Very good movies, the storyline was pretty accurate and the action was excellent. I would recommend this movie.
