5 out of 5 stars A real classic   May 17, 2009

Dont expect oscar winning performances from this low budget movie. Its a real sign of its times and as such is a genuine cult classic. No special effects and a poor plot cannot detract from this films appeal, buy it now.

4 out of 5 stars Great cheapo biker flick with crap incidental music   June 13, 2009
D. J. HORN (Ellington Village, Northumberland, GB)

In this 1974 Aussie biker flick, set in Sydney, someone is killing off members of "The Gravediggers", a Hells Angels chapter into Satanism and having a good time, so they hole up in what looks like a World War 2 coastal bunker complex for safety. They have all mod cons there from a generator for the `lecky to a pin table. br / br /They don't like pigs (as they all refer constantly and therefore eventually irritatingly to the police) and when a long-haired cop (Stone played by Ken Shorter) is sent to help find the killer they are at first objectionable before grudgingly allowing him to ride with them after a vote. br / br /Director Sandy Harbutt plays the Diggers leader, The Undertaker and the rest are an assorted motley crew with faintly ridiculous names like "Stinkfinger". My one criticism of the characters (apart from their names) is that Stone is one of those cops that seem too good to be true - he refuses tokes and will not deal out justice of any sort to the baddies, for which he ultimately suffers a suitable punishment. Eye candy for the guys is provided by Helen Morse, Rebecca Gilling and Susan Lloyd. br / br /For a biker flick with gang members going on about riding powerful bikes, there are precious few of them, most looking distinctly like low-powered 250cc off-the-peg models with skinny tyres, little wrap-around windscreens; all much the same apart from sporting different colours. Apart from an odd chopper or two they are anything but the "150 horsepower of screaming metal between their legs" and self-respecting Angels wouldn't be seen dead on them (no pun intended). I assume that the actual Angels that appear in the film were the ones with the "proper" machines. br / br /Despite this being a good film in itself and saying that it has been "fully restored from original vault elements" (that must have been stored in a crypt), the picture quality leaves much to be desired. Clearly it was a cheapo-cheapo production and hasn't been overhauled at all for this transfer. Indeed it looks like it's copied from a poor VHS tape. It's soft, fuzzy and totally lacking in detail even on a decent upscaling DVD player. The colours are washed out and sparklies abound. Overall it's about the same quality, probably due to having a similar budget, as the cheap-looking pornos that circulated in offices on VHS in the early 80s. br / br /The sound is just the original mono too and there are no subtitles. I really think this deserved better treatment and should have been restored to some extent. I suppose that the limited market didn't justify it - yet they went to the trouble of a 2 DVD SE. br / br /As stated, the incidental music is terrible, the only good bit being the rock that plays over the credits at the end. br / br /Extras on the 2DVD SE comprise the "Stone Forever" making of, another making of, makeup test and director's slideshow. br / br /Finally I don't really think that the film justified its "18" rating - it's more like a "15". br /
