Amazon.co.uk Review
Itrsquo;s way past time that Isla Fisher bagged herself a leading role, after solid supporting turns in the likes of emWedding Crashers/em and emDefinitely, Maybe/em and finally, in emConfessions Of A Shopaholic/em, the ex-soap star gets her chance. pShe seizes it quite well, too. Based on the Sophie Kinsella book of the same name, emConfessions Of A Shopaholic/em is a fairly conventional romantic comedy, but itrsquo;s still a very enjoyable one. Itrsquo;s directed by PJ Hogan, who previously gave us the excellent double bill of emMurielrsquo;s Wedding/em and emMy Best Friendrsquo;s Wedding/em, and it follows Fisherrsquo;s character Rebecca as she tries to cover up her dedication to shopping, while yearning for a job on a fashion magazine./p pThe plot goes through the fairly standard shenanigans of the genre, but there are one or two things that lift emConfessions Of A Shopaholic/em above the norm. Firstly, itrsquo;s breezy and very good fun. Secondly, PJ Hogan knows this genre better than most, and fashions (no pun intended) a quite tight movie. And thirdly therersquo;s Fisher. It may not be a role that makes her an outright movie star, but therersquo;s compelling evidence here that shersquo;s got the talent to be a leading lady in her own right. This, her first stab at headlining such a film, works really quite well, and her charm and enthusiasm is the best thing in it. Worth taking a look at. ndash;-emJon Foster/em/p

5 out of 5 stars What do they expect with a title like Confessions of a Shopaholic?!?   March 4, 2009

I loved this film. I had to get that out straight away. It is definitely one to watch with the girls to giggle and sigh over but what is wrong with that? br / br /Rebecca is someone who every woman who likes to shop will be able to identify with. She is such a likeable heroine that despite her silly mistakes the audience cannot help but cheer her on and care what happens to her. br / br /Luke is a perfect match for her. Despite being gorgeous, Dancy brings a softer side of machismo to the screen and allows the women in the audience to become captivated with how he sees the real Rebecca. br / br /The comedy is light but insightful, brilliant and sometimes laugh-out-loud funny. The tearful bits are, as stated, tearful and moving. The journey that Rebecca goes on will inspire women to put away their credit cards for at least a week. It is also brilliant. br / br /This was never going to be a movie that shook the world. I didn't need it to be. I loved it for what it was, my kind of film. I walked away thinking I wanted Rebecca to be my best friend, though I definitely identified with her a little too much for comfort (!), and Luke to call ME. Honestly, if you don't like this kind of film - why watch it in the first place and then complain about everything that wasn't shockingly nouveau? br / br /Like romantic comedies? Like Confessions of a Shopaholic.

I have read all of Sophie Kinsella's books so I couldnt wait to see this film! I went to see it twice at the cinema and have just watched it for a third time on DVD. Isla is so funny in it and the perfect Rebecca. It does stray quite a bit from the books but I still loved it and I am sure all Shopaholic fans will enjoy it!

5 out of 5 stars A great movie of the book   August 21, 2009

I love the book of this film and had heard negative reviews, so i watched with a view to it not being so good, but it was brilliant, okay so it is not the same as the book and we all have our own vision of Becky and Luke as a reader, but the film was funny and heartwarming - just like the book, with great outfits and good casting. br / br /I was firstly not impressed when i heard it was going to be Isla Fisher in the role as i just remember her from 'Home and Away' and nothing like how i imagined Becky but she was a great Becky and a very funny actress. So i am very pleased she got the job. br /The guy who played Luke was great too and the fact that Becky was in such trouble with her finances did come out well and yet it was a very feelgood movie. So well done to all involved, loved it! br / br /Wish a follow up would be made!

I've been waiting for this film to be released since I first heard it was in production - 6 months ago - and it's been a long wait! I've been chomping at the bit to go and see it since I heard it was coming out in February. I've read every book in this series and so I had high hopes for the film. I wasn't dissapointed - much! While the film was very laugh-out-loud funny for most of the time, it only stuck loosly to the theme of the book. For a start, Rebecca lives in London and the film is set in New York. There are also some very funny moments in the book that I wish would have panned out on screen. Also, books one and two are merged, the ending of two providing the finale of this film. But while I preferred the book, the film was very good, and Isla Fisher more than matched up to my image of Becky - actually I thought Isla portrayed a better Becky than the Becky we meet in the book, coming across as more endearing and innocent and you really feel sorry for her in parts. br /Hugh Dancy plays Luke Brandon, and while they altered his character a lot, (For a start he's editor of Successful Saving in the film while in the book he's head honcho of his own multi-million pound firm) I think he did a very good job of playing Luke, even if in my imagination Luke Brandon was taller and more clean-cut. br / br /All in all this film is a good watch, and I got totally lost in the plot line. And while a lot of characters have been altered for the screen I still enjoyed it. Maybe it wasn't wise to release a film about a shopoholic when people are drowning in a credit-crunch but it brings a little light relief into otherwise depressing times. All in all, Isla and Hugh did a great job in the lead roles and I would like a few sequals pan out - particularly 'Ties the Knot' and 'Baby' br /For anyone going to see this film, I'd say see it first then read the book - for me having done it in the reverse kind of spoiled the film for me as it didn't quite match up to my expectations having read the book first. Nevertheless I will be buying this when it comes out. A feel-good comedy/romance that even the thriftiest person would enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars A Fun Film - for everything else there's Mastercard...   February 21, 2009

Sorry to those reading this review - but I had to stick that reference in somewhere - its cheesy I know. But lets return now to the matter at hand. Was Confessions of a Shopaholic any good? For the most part it was a witty, funny and an engaging film. br / br /Firstly to the films main characters. The star of the show was without a doubt Isla Fisher (who played Shannon in Home and Away once upon a time). She played Rebecca, our loveable shopping addict. Throughout the film she proves she can carry a main role with flare and is quite adept at slapstick humour. Her attempts at avoiding the debt collectors are hilarious - particularly her increasingly bizzare stories (at one point her aunt had just died in a sky diving accident). Also loved the fact that every excuse involved Finland (apparently because nobody would check a story if it involved Finland). One point to note - I wasn't that taken with Rebecca being a cliche fashion bimbo. br / br /Hugh Dancy fulfills our workaholic-issues with parents-lacking confidence-Britishman role. Since Hugh is from Britain then automatically he must sport an accent from south east England. For his actual performance in the film - he is somewhat flat. He is clearly there to fulfill a requirement and he is only effective when in a scene with Rebecca. br / br /Small note to the sterling support cast. Be they Hayley the secretary (aka Julie Hagerty from Airplane); the Shopaholic Support Group (who literally salivate as Isla describes what she loves about a store). And finally the debt collector played by Robert Stanton (to whom I will return later). br / br /The story of the movie is easy to follow. Its a standard plot of a girl realising there is more to life than shopping. But thats the trick with films like this. Nobody watches it to have a life changing moment - they watch it because they are exhausted on a Friday night, want a curry and escape into a world where everything comes alright in the end. In a nutshell - if you liked the Devil Wears Prada - you will love this movie. br / br /The special effect for the mannequins who come to life enticing Rebecca were stunning. I don't think I will ever look at a mannequin in a shop window quite the same again. br / br /Now to the problems of the film. Of which there was in my view only two. The potrayal of the debt collector was somewhat cliche. He was right to the end - put forward as Mr Nasty. But I couldn't help but think he was doing his job, mainly track down our would-be-heroine Rebecca who keeps trying to give him the slip. I can't help but think it reflects a psychology in the audience to spend spend spend (like Rebecca) and they dislike anyone who tries to end the party (the debt collector). Credit Crunch folks! br / br /The films running time was spot on. Had it gone on any longer it would have lost my attention. However there comes a point in the movie (when the debt collector finally catches up with Rebecca) and the storyline becomes very predictable. I could have ticked off each development on a checklist. However the editors of the movie clearly knew what the audience would like - Isla is the center of attention throughout and the supporting cast provide support when it is needed. br / br /Confessions of a Shopaholic is a good movie. Bit cliched in places and Hugh Dancy is as flat as a pancake (I was rather surprised when Rebecca gave up dazzling shoes for inanimate Hugh). The story is predictable in the extreme but who cares. br / br /If you get this movie it will be to curl up on the sofa on a Friday night, get a curry in and kick back. Mind you - after Rebecca describes why she loves shopping, you will probably find yourself logging on to the internet and doing a bit of shopping.
