AN INTELLIGENT FILM May 1, 2009 Robert C. Graham (OGMORE BY SEA, VALE OF GLAMORGAN United Kingdom) 9 out of 11 found this review helpful
If you are expecting The Business and want to sit back and be carried along then you would be disappointed - if however you are expecting an intelligent multi layered film that you have to think about and watch the threads come together or unwind with Danny and Tamar using method acting to a degree never seen before you will love it. If you are a fan of Danny Dyer or Tamar it will reinforce your opinion. Great, difficult, performances from Susan Lynch, Myanna Burring and Ray Panthaki. This is one you can watch several times to catch the detail you may have missed the first time round.

Great intelligent British drama May 3, 2009 M. Hewitt (London) 10 out of 11 found this review helpful
City Rats is not quite the film I was expecting after seeing the DVD cover, but it is still a great independent British movie that works on so many levels.
br /
br /The film follows a group of separate characters over the course of one day as they all come to terms with key moments in each of their lives (a wannabe suicide, a lonely prostitute, a man trying to escape his gangster background etc). The story lines are all very engaging, and the acting is first-rate throughout, especially from Danny Dyer who shines in a role that doesn't exactly show him in the most sympathetic light.

br /If you're in the mood for a fresh, thoughtful and intelligent new Brit-flick, this is the one for you...
i like this one actually April 3, 2009 Gail (London, England) 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
i thought this was a good film - not quite what you'd expect but its cool to see danny and tammer stretching themselves a bit ... worth a watch definetley.
If only it was subtitled.... June 30, 2009 A. Ranson (Dursley) This film got some awful reviews because it falls between two stools; 'Art House' and 'Brit flick'. It's got universally excellent cinematography and an ambitious narrative. Agreed not all the characterisation and dialogue is convincing, but interestingly no two reviewers can agree which bits are naff and which are spot-on.
br /
br /I've sat through some excruciating films in several languages which are critically acclaimed. I'm quite certain that this was a foreign language film then all its faults would be forgiven and its visual and narrative ambition would be appreciated.
br /
br /If some future New Wave Director in a far away place cites this film as a major influence in a few years time perhaps it will get a fairer critical reception over here.
