An amazing bargain! May 3, 2009 StudentTeacher 21 out of 21 found this review helpful
In a nutshell: I absolutely love it!
br /
br /The box itself: It feels very sturdy and well put together. The transparent plastic around it might be a little annoying when you have to remove it every time you take a disk out or put one back in, but it protects the box itself from scratches and dirt. Each DVD comes in a plastic slim DVD case.
br /
br /The films: The film quality is astounding! In comparison to the previously released 'Special Edition' dual DVDs, picture quality has been dramatically improved! It's much clearer and sharper and the colours do not 'bleed'. Also, picture noise has been almost eliminated, so that smoke and close up exterior shots of starships' hulls are perfectly clear and sharp. Plus, compression artefacts are nowhere to be seen. The sound has also been improved, although I still think that 'The Wrath of Kahn' sounds like they used inferiour audio equipment when they recorded the actors' lines... but that's only a personal opinion.
br /
br /All in all I highly recommend this boxset if you don't own the previous Special Editions or if you want a serious upgrade in picture quality. Then again, you might think of getting them on bluray if you happen to have a player.
Nicely done.... May 2, 2009 Andrew D McAllister 12 out of 14 found this review helpful
From a not so sad (I hope) 40 year old, lookin' for a bit of escapism and a memory of childhood, I purchased the recently released Star Trek original series remastered, and this set of films to go along with it.
br /
br /The set is realy nicely done and presented. But the best bit is the comparison with previous editions in the remastery and the clean up job they have done. everything looks and sounds realy fresh.
br /
br /The price tags aren't etortion, and the discs aren't overloaded with extras. For someone who has never got into any of the follow up Trek series, but has an undying soft spot for the original, I recommend this set.
br /
br /The five stars is for the whole lot, the three series and the movies as a whole package. And finally, to Paramount...... Cheers. I'm glad I resisted the urges to purchase previous editions, this release was worth hanging on for.
br /
br /The series and films are of course as cheesy as the always were. But thats part of the appeal......
The word is given..... June 11, 2009 M. J. Nash (North Wales) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
There were a couple of the Original movies I only had on VHS, so this box set was the perfect excuse to complete (and refresh) my collection.
br /
br /The set arrived promptly and the packaging is sturdy enough to keep the DVD's safe for some time.
br /
br /The films themselves have all been remastered and are the original cinema versions, not the later directors cuts, which is OK.
br /
br /The picture and sound quality of all of the films is superb, alas, the actual quality of the films is, as always, highly variable.
br /
br /Star Trek The Motion Picture is still as slow and as plodding as I remember it, despite the remastered print, this is probably the worst film of the 6.
br /The Wrath of Khan - what can I say, still top dog (just) but I would recommend the DC of this one as it fills in some gaps.
br /The Search for Spock - second to last, just slows down too much and has the comedy Klingons in it, a shame the Enterprise got trashed in such a bad film.
br /The Voyage Home - I would put this third from bottom, it hasn't aged well and is the least Trek like IMHO, I just don't like this one, it's too jokey.
br /The Final Frontier - on rewatching this one, it's really not that bad and has some really good moments, I rate this above ST:IV, but the nude Uhura fan dance is too much.
br /The Undiscovered Country - Superb, second only to ST:II, good plot, great villian, excellent battle scene.
br /
br /This is a great addition to the collection for any Trek fan.
Question about Box May 5, 2009 David B (England) 2 out of 6 found this review helpful
Those that have purchased the set already, could you tell me if Star Trek IV The Voyage Home still includes the Prologue before the film that is narrated by William Shatner?
br /All previous versions in the UK that I know of have had this and I was hoping it was still present on these new discs.
br /Thanks
STAR TREK June 5, 2009 Ms. K. Harris (East Sussex, Great Britain) We'll what can I say except STAR TREK is the hughmungussly the best thing ever to rich our TV screen and Cinema screen. May our future show us that things are possible and maybe we can have alittle STAR TREK there to.
