the wrestler is without doubt one of the most beautiful films you will ever watch a triump from start to finnish mickey rourke would have been a very worthy best actor oscar winner the violance in the ring is extreme yet sit's perfectly within this most gentle of films in years to come i beleave this sublime piece of cinema will be respected for what it truely is a joy for the heart
A man stuck in his past battling for his future March 16, 2009 The Riddler (UK) 2 out of 11 found this review helpful
This is very well acted and directed the subtle clues show how life is a harder battle than being in the ring. I really thought it was brilliant tho am finding it hard to give review without spoiling your experience. The music is used to refelect the Guns and Roses era and agains hints to a man battling with who he is now and who he once was. Randy "The Ram" Robinson, will pin you 1 2 3 with this brilliant performance from Rourke
FBI should investigate this daylight robbery June 5, 2009 R. Searle (UK) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I admit I am complete Rourke homeboy. He was outstanding in the 80s. His performances in films like The Pope of Greenwich Village, Year of the Dragon, 9 1/2 Weeks and Angel Heart were superb. He was incredibly intense, good looking, cool, hard, yet vulnerable and sensitive. Women loved him and men wanted to be him. He was, the 80s equivalent of De Niro and Pacino in the 70s.

br /In my opinion his real come back was in Sin City. He was the stand-out in an otherwise repellent film. But it was great to see him finally get the critical and public acclaim he has deserved for so long with The Wrestler. That he was robbed of the Oscar is one of the cinematic crimes of all time. This performance is amazing - Rourke is completely believable and compelling in the role. A particularly notable scene for me is where Rourke is in the chemists and Robin Ramzinsky's name is called over the tannoy. His fumbling around as he acknowledges the call, and mumbling plea to the pharmacist to be called "Randy", is incredibly moving.

br /This was the performance of a lifetime for Rourke and I doubt he will ever have such a good opportunity to win an Oscar - his face has taken too much of a battering to feature in the sort of mainstream dramatic roles that tend to get rewarded. But since the Oscars reward utter mediocrity time and again, maybe it's not such a great loss.

br /I agree that it isn't a perfect film - though the documentary style cannot be criticised as it lends the film a sense of cinema verite. I did find the plot a little rough and predictable and the relationship with the daughter never rang true to me. But the ending is one of the best moments in recent movie history.
One - Two - Three June 16, 2009 C. J. P (uk) I totally enjoyed this film MR performance is as good as the hype suggested. The film is predictable but that's not the point, it totally does what its supposed to do in telling the story of a human journey, this one happens to be a wrestler. Its has emotion, substance and humour in what ultimately is a quite depressing story. Really good although not much extras on the DVD/Blu Ray!!
Well worth the BAFTA November 12, 2009 R. Peters (The Netherlands) A beautifully shot, briliantly acted raw pseudo documentary on the washed-out pro-wrestlers of the eighties that are desperately trying to cling on to a fading past. If you've watched the WWF fights back in the day this film adds an extra dimension.
