Hilarious, witty and a strong cast August 15, 2009 maximus (manchester, uk) 13 out of 15 found this review helpful
I think sometimes people stop watching Allen's movies as films in their own right, as they would other movies. By that I mean they immediately try to analyse scene by scene to try to spot critical acclaim or failure. If you watch this film without Allen-critique goggles in the way you would pretty much any other film, you might find its roots in European film making, of the likes of Almodovar. If this had been filmed in Spanish or French or Italian with English subtitles, the "world cinema" lovers might have hailed it as a masterpiece of hilarity and high wit.

br /That aside, as a film in its own right, I thoroughly enjoyed it and will watch it again and come back to it over the years. The strong cast is an added bonus, and the Oscar for Cruz was thoroughly deserved. As for Javier Bardem - his range is amazing, having been basically the psychotic central character in "No Country For Old Men", to then transform into this romantic and seductive character in Allen's film, is a testament to his unlimited abilities as an actor. Brilliant.
br /
br /On the subject of the voice over - it's neither annoying nor adding anything, but it is what it is - part of the movie and as long as you don't try to over-analyse that too, then it's not a problem.

br /Watch it, enjoy it, and you will find yourself with a smile on your face.
Hugely entertaining April 24, 2009 Simon James (u.k) 21 out of 27 found this review helpful
I went to see this film at the cinema due to the favourable reviews it had received in newspapers. I applaud Woody Allen for making a film that sparkled with wit and was directed with panache, with well defined charcters, and a fresh and lively twist in it's telling. The newspaper reviews were right. I thoroughly enjoyed this delightful and engaging film and that's why I'll be ordering it on DVD. I simply have no understanding for the less favourable reviews placed here for this film.
this is a great film April 3, 2009 Roxana Voicila 25 out of 33 found this review helpful
i just can't believe the other review. this is a very lush, beautiful, slow paced film by woody allen with a very european feel to it. the idea to make this film in barcelona was just great, as it's one of the most gorgeous cities on earth. it's not a film for everyone, as some may wrongly see it as "boring". i have to say those people just don't know how to appreciate a film like this and i would advise them to leave the job of reviewing to others and go watch an action movie or something. this is one of the best films of the year and penelope is fantastic in it.
Barcelona Women Mysteries June 22, 2009 MORTEN AASTAD (Oslo Norway) 3 out of 6 found this review helpful
Woody Allen can never make Manhattan or Annie Hall again. Simply put, the world isn't smart enough for that brand of movie being made. people don't get that way of communicating, studios don't get why anyone would make a movie for the art and so on. Woody himself isn't that person anymore. he is a man in his 70s, and he can't keep stooping these young women. That being said, it could be nice to see him as an old man, married to a woman his own age, in some sort of adventure, not unlike Manhattan Murder Mysteries again, but, what with the US studios not fronting him the cash, I guess he won't make movies where he ties up parts of Manahattan again?
br /
br /All that being said, Woody Allen is timeless, yet he keeps fresh, and keeps up with current actors and so on. His language may at times seem a bit archaic, but I don't think we suffer from hearing people talk properly. The actors he works with adore him and the freedom he offers them. He is an actors director, trusting that they know their craft. That shows, also in this movie.
br /
br /Should you preffer humour and cringe at drama with people behaving in a... sexually embarrassing way,w ell then this is probably not the movie for you.
br /
br /If you love watching movies where the relationship between human beings, with all their beauty, all their faults, desires, cruelty, egotism and horny behaviour out there for all to see, well, then this is the movie for you.
br /
br /Sure, Woody doesn't have a real grasp of Europe anno 2008, or for that matter, New York, but I love him for it. The fact that he ignores what people think he should do, and ignores the bland movie making going on these days, and just does his thing. He is my hero, and I am not ashamed to say so.
br /
br /I loved this movie, it was a real shot in the arm for his body of work (I couldn't stand Cassandra's Dream), and I reccomend it warmly.
br /
br /However, my top 3 Woody Allen movies of all time, are still Manhattan, Stardust Memories and Broadway Danny Rose.
Raising the bar July 22, 2009 W. Rodick (Cheshire United Kingdom) 2 out of 5 found this review helpful
It is said that Woody Allen is back on form with VCB. I disagree: he has raised the bar for film comedy with this refreshing take on tea-for-three, in other words he is better than before. Loved the editing style using the full glory of the setting and some cinematic conversations which pour scorn over the tv movie instinct of most film comedies.
br /I might criticise the plain tone of the narrator but I think I could be hankering for that dry, brittle wit of Allen in such films as 'Manhatten.' Here it's understated storytelling that does blend well with imagery and soundtrack. Highly recommended.
