Released in 1981, this is Michael Mann's first feature film, although The Jericho Mile, a tv movie, was previously commercially released in this country. Jericho Mile, a kind of American version of Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner, had given a heads up for those who cared with its use of real prisoners and its scarily real view of the US penal system. Thief kept up the same high standards, but with a better script, which despite having on the face of it a fairly hackneyed plot, career criminal plans one last job,was rather better than that with tough dialogue and a hard edged sense of realism. Mann's typically stylised take on it and an excellent cast makes this a well above average jewel heist with echoes of Rififi. James Caan is perfectly cast as the hard bitten ex-con and master thief forced to work for a local gangster. Willie Nelson and Tuesday Weld add strong supporting performances and Tangerine Dream, as usual, provide the atmospheric music.Recommended. br / br /
